Mrs. Shantel (Nobles) Patt (’07) came to the Hill and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in English, Language Arts, and Reading.

I’m an educator by calling and an author by obedience—teaching, serving, and planting seeds wherever God places me. As a 2nd grade teacher, I believe education is more than instruction; it’s rooted in relationship, care, and purpose. My book, Class Is in Session: Teaching Through the Chaos, grew out of my classroom experiences and my desire to encourage and uplift other educators navigating life and work with faith and intention. Outside of the classroom and writing, my greatest joy is my family. I’m a wife to an amazing husband and a mom to three bonus daughters and twin sons, and they keep me grounded and centered, reminding me why rest, balance, and faith matter. My life is rooted in love, intention, and showing up fully for the people God has entrusted to me.

I was drawn to ETBU because of its strong faith foundation and commitment to developing the whole person—not just academically, but spiritually and personally. Knowing that my older brother had attended made it feel even more like home, and I wanted to be in an environment where my calling to serve, lead, and teach could grow alongside my faith. ETBU felt like a place where I could be supported, challenged, and prepared to walk confidently in the purpose God had for my life.

Two incredible women who made a lasting impact on my time at ETBU were Dr. Karen Gentsch and Dr. Donna Dooley. Their guidance, encouragement, and unwavering belief in my potential shaped not only my academic growth but also my confidence and sense of purpose. They modeled what it means to lead with grace, integrity, and faith, and their influence continues to inspire me in my personal life, teaching, and writing.

One of the best parts of ETBU for me has been the people I met there. My best friend Gaylon and I connected during our time on campus, and our friendship has lasted ever since. Beyond that, I’ve built relationships with other alumni that are full of encouragement, support, and shared faith—it really feels like being part of a lifelong family.

I still remember the buzz of Homecoming—the excitement in the air, the crowd cheering, the sense that anything was possible. Singing in United Voices of Praise filled my soul and gave me a voice I didn’t know I had. As a cheerleader and a Tigerline dancer, I learned what it meant to move with joy, confidence, and purpose, all while lifting others up around me. Those moments weren’t just fun—they shaped who I am, connected me to an incredible community, and left me with memories that feel alive every time I think of the Hill.

My time on the Hill prepared me in so many ways—both professionally and personally. Working at the Marshall-Harrison County Literacy Council while at ETBU helped deepen my love for reading and gave me hands-on experience that shaped my approach as a teacher. Being involved in United Voices of Praise, cheerleading, and Tigerline taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to show up consistently, even when it’s challenging. The professors and mentors I connected with modeled leadership, integrity, and faith in action, which shaped how I approach teaching and writing today. ETBU helped me learn how to balance purpose and passion, stand confidently in my calling, and pour into others while staying grounded in faith and family. Every lesson I learned on campus has carried over into my classroom, my writing, and my life.

If I could give some advice to current Tigers, I’d tell them to show up fully for themselves and for others, even when life feels heavy. Embrace your calling, trust the process, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or take the time you need to rest and reset. Remember, sooner or later, everything starts turning in your favor. Lean on your faith, pour love into the people around you, and know that your life and your work have purpose. Keep moving, keep believing, and enjoy the journey—you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
