I wanted a sound education in an environment that fostered my faith in Christ. ETBU was just that. It was a great fit with teachers and a student body that genuinely cared for each other and loved the Lord.
Looking back on the faculty that impacted my life, there are too many to count! Dr. Bob Utley showed us how to be relentless and thoughtful in our study of the Word, while also teaching us how our daily walk with Christ should be joyful and fun. Dr. Bob even married me to my college sweetheart, Amie.
Alan Thompson lived and demonstrated to us a simple, worshipful, and intimate walk with God. He showed us how to do the same. I can recall working with him at Second Baptist Church, ministering to the Royal Ambassadors. My Business Communications professor taught me key writing skills that I continue to use today.
There are so many great stories of dear friends and amazing times! I played soccer for ETBU my freshman year, and recall spending the first bit of practice running 2 miles just to warm up. I was in the best shape of my life thanks to Coach Jose Alonzo. I remember having one of the best nights of sleep in my life in the Feagin dormitory, when a tornado ripped through the campus overnight. Another favorite memory was when eight fellow students and I left town at 7 pm and drove 12 hours to Atlanta, Georgia. We went to see DC Talk and Billy Graham—we had an amazing time, and Pastor Graham was unforgettable.
However, what stood out most were the Wednesday nights at BSM, featuring excellent student-led worship —usually by Shaune Martinez —and incredible preaching. Occasionally, a student would accept Christ as their Lord and Savior, and we would leave the Wednesday service and head up the Hill to the fountain to baptize them immediately. It was amazing and spirit-filled. I learned how to share the Gospel while at ETBU. I am eternally grateful for the raw, meaningful moments of my time on the Hill.
During my years, we had great professors who provided me with the fundamental skills in accounting, economics, finance, business communications, and much more, which prepared me technically for a career in accounting and finance. More importantly, my fellow students and teachers at ETBU helped me grow closer to Jesus Christ. For that, I am eternally grateful.
To the current students of ETBU and future Tigers, I would tell you this: An education can be an inconvenience between weekends or a fertilizer between ears! Let it be the latter and treat every class as an opportunity to learn and grow. You are laying the foundation for who you are becoming as a person and how you are going to contribute to the world … and learn to love Jesus and your fellow man in the process!
