Mr. George Moore (’71) completed his degree from ETBU and began his educational career with the Texarkana ISD later that year. For over 47 years, he faithfully served the district as teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent. He and his wife, Carolyn, have been married for over 50 years, and are the proud parents of their son, Chad.

Read along to hear more of George’s story, and reflections on his journey.

I was born in 1948 to George and Comrie Moore. My childhood consisted of being reared on a farm in Marshall, Texas with two very Godly, loving, and hard-working parents during the 1950’s and 1960’s. This was a time of segregation and Jim Crow. I never heard my mother or father make a racist remark, nor allowed us to attend public functions where we would encounter racial hate or ungodly treatment. I was never exposed to racial hate; therefore, I didn’t understand hating others because of their color. When integration occurred, it was a perfect opportunity to advance my education in a Christian environment that would allow me to receive a great Christian education at East Texas Baptist Colleg. This education at ETBC, a white Christian college, would give me the experience and understanding of how to navigate a new society that was quickly becoming inclusive and offering opportunities that were not available before to people of color. Dr. Shirley Handler left a lasting impact on my life. Dr. Handler was probably the most educated and intelligent lady I had ever met. Her impressive demonstration and explanation of the DNA molecule opened my mind to the complex creation of God.

When I attended ETBC, I lived off campus, drove a school bus, and worked part-time. Therefore, I did not have the experiences of those living on campus. Students were required to attend Chapel three times a week. I enjoyed Chapel and still remember some of the life lessons that I learned while attending those services. Upon graduating from ETBC, my first job was teaching biology at Texas High School in Texarkana, Texas. This was the beginning of an illustrious and very satisfying career in education that bestowed upon me many honors and awards.

I am a witness that a person who loves their job will never have to work a day in their life! ETBC prepared me for an educational career through a combination of rigorous academic programs, practical experience, and a strong emphasis on integrating faith with professional practice.

I was prepared to be an educator who approached my profession with a sense of mission, purpose, and a commitment to serving others in a Christ-centered environment.
