Alumni Spotlight Dr. Jim Shaw (’91)

This image shows three people standing together in front of a brick and stone house with arched windows and dark wooden shutters. The woman on the left is wearing a light blue patterned blouse with white pants. The young woman in the center is wearing a bright pink dress with short sleeves and a square neckline. The man on the right is dressed in a dark navy blazer, light blue dress shirt, and jeans. All three are smiling and standing close together, posing for the photo in a sunny outdoor setting.

Dr. Jim Shaw (’91) completed a Bachelor’s in Christian Ministry at ETBU and later earned a Master’s of Divinity as well as a Ph. D in Practical Theology from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary.

“Upon graduation, I served as the Student Pastor at Wynne Baptist Church in Arkansas. Although all of my contemporaries drove down the road to finish their education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, God had different plans for me.”

Dr. Shaw now serves as the Executive Pastor of Discipleship at First Baptist Church in Rogers, Arkansas, where he leads the Discipleship Team, Safety Team, Welcome Team, and Summer Leadership Academy Internship for College Students. First Baptist Rogers has grown along with the rest of the diverse community. Serving as the Discipleship Pastor for over twelve years, Dr. Shaw has been instrumental in making many disciples in what has become a mega-church.

“ETBU was the perfect place for God to prepare me for ministry, and I was so hungry to know more about God's Word.”

“Dr. Bob Utley began by stripping away the simple and ignorant beliefs about how God's Word was compiled, but he laid a foundational confidence in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God. That foundation remains unchanged! Dr. Potts was also a great influencer with a gracious and simple understanding to comprehend God's Word. Also, I will be forever grateful for the generous scholarship provided by Bo Pilgrim, who attended my home church at FBC Pittsburg, Texas.”
