Israel 2019

Students earned credit for either Lands and Cities of Israel, taught by Dean of the School of Christian Studies John Harris, or Introduction to Old Testament, taught by Assistant Provost and Associate Professor of Religion and Leadership Emily Prevost. In the Old Testament course, they learned about Psalms (songs) of Ascent or going up to Jerusalem.

They also wrote their own Psalms of Ascent as a part of the experience.

Going up to Jerusalem
Up to the stone roads full of history
The steps Jesus walked.
The Tomb where Jesus rose.
May I never forget the reason for
the chapels and the celebrations of
the tomb.
The resurrection of the savior.
As I walk up to Jerusalem may I
see the Golden Arches of
cathedrals
May I see the streets filled with the
people Jesus died for.
And remember that the tomb is
vacant and my savior is alive.

by Libby Lormand
From the foot of Jerusalem
I ask God for strength.
Though my body grows tired,
Your hand brings energy.
Comfort my spirit
That my attitude may remain
positive.
Ready my mind and focus
So I am able to learn more of you.
As the road to the city ascends,
So too may the joy in my heart.

by Hallie Bench
I look up to Jerusalem
As I make my way up
As I walk I am tired
But God strengthens my bones
I feel now refreshed
My body is renewed
The city on the hill shouts
God's name
The surrounding areas also lift
up his praise
The mountains reach up to
touch his greatness
