Meet Professor Matthew McKinnon

Matthew McKinnon serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Musical Theatre in the Music Department of the School of Communication and Performing Arts at East Texas Baptist University. He has completed all coursework and examinations for the Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and is currently finishing his dissertation. He also holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Throughout his career, he has taught applied voice, with an emphasis on classical and musical theatre repertoire. His research interests include English art song, particularly the works of Arthur Somervell and its pedagogical value in training developing baritone voices. He has performed extensively in opera, oratorio, and recital settings, and is known for his interpretive depth and stylistic versatility.
He believes in the power of Christian higher education to foster both artistic and personal growth, and he is passionate about mentoring students to pursue their calling with excellence and integrity.
