Meet Dr. Rodrigo Schmidt

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:15-17, KJV

Dr. Schmidt has more than 20 years of experience in teaching undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Biology at East Texas Baptist University. Dr. Schmidt got his Ph.D. in Cardiology from the Heart Institute (InCor), University of São Paulo Medical School, São Paulo, SP, Brazil. He arrived in the United States in 2015 to help develop a GWI (Gulf War Illness) mouse model for cardiovascular studies (DoD-funded grant). His work on a GWI animal model led to a Clinical Trial study with GWI patients, which established a new approach for GWI treatment. Dr. Schmidt received the NSU President’s Faculty Development and Research Award for two consecutive years, 2017 and 2018, and he also received the NSU External Funding Recognition Award FY 2019. Dr. Schmidt’s research focuses on the Autonomic Nervous System Modulation assessed by Heart Rate Variability analysis and investigates methodologies to modulate the Autonomic System response. While teaching, Dr. Schmidt enjoys guiding the students on their journey throughout the Human Anatomy and Physiology, pointing out irrefutable evidence for our intelligent design. He believes that God created us in His own image, according to His likeness and studying the complexity of the human body brings us closer to Him. Most importantly, Dr. Schmidt hopes that this approach in class can lead the students into a relationship with Jesus. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, will be transformed into the same image from glory to glory. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18. Dr. Schmidt loves spending time with his wife, Kelen, and their children, Nicolas and Rebeca. He also enjoys road trips with his wife on a motorcycle.
