The Department of Languages and Literature exists to empower scholar-leaders to cultivate and practice the discipline of textual literacy so that they can fulfill their calling of service to God and humanity. Our students cultivate a variety of skills that can be used in many careers, such as analytic reading, effective writing, advanced critical thinking, imaginative problem solving, an understanding of unique viewpoints and audiences, and emotional intelligence. Students may choose from three different majors: English B.A. (with specializations in literature, writing, or education), English B.S.E. (which provides certification to teach Language Arts grades 7-12 and a semester of student teaching), and Humanities B.A. (a unique, interdisciplinary major, including courses from many departments with specializations in Leadership, Global Community, Faith, Learning and Teaching, Law and Society, Philosophy, Arts and Media, and Writing). We also offer minors in English, Writing, the Humanities, and Spanish Language and Culture. Students are involved in the community of the department in many ways, including our annual creative writing contest and Sigma Tau Delta, our chapter of the international English honors society.
