Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. The society seeks to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and improve historical research and publication by members in a variety of ways.
- Undergraduate Qualifications

To qualify, undergraduate students must do the following:
- Complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 courses) in History, earned in the classroom, online or through AP or transfer credits (or a combination thereof).
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.1 in courses related to History.
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA overall.
- Pay an initiation fee; the amount is determined by the national association.
- Graduate or Post-baccalaureate Qualifications

Graduate or post-baccalaureate degree students matriculated in similarly qualified institutions and in degree programs in History are eligible for induction if they have:
- Completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master’s Degree in History.
- Have a GPA of better than 3.5.
- Completed approximately 30% of ETBU’s requirements for the Master’s Degree.
