SGA Senator Election Information


2016-2017 SGA Senator Applications for Senior, Junior, and Sophomore Senator seats (three seats per class), as well as for three Senator-at-Large seats, will be available later in the Spring 2016 semester. Applications will be available both online and in Student Affairs, and will be due by 5pm on Friday, April 15 in the Student Affairs office. Campaigning will take place during the week of April 18-21, and elections will be held online Tuesday, April 19, through Thursday, April 21.

Campaign and Election Guidelines:

You may not begin campaigning until you receive an email confirmation from Tyler Sellers, SGA Sponsor. The confirmation email will contain the guidelines for campaigning. Candidates violating the guidelines will forfeit the opportunity to participate in the elections.
Senators
The legislative and judicial powers of the Student Government Association shall be vested in the Student Legislature which shall consist of the Student Senate. The Student Senate shall consist of 3 freshman senators, 3 sophomore senators, 3 junior senators, 3 senior senators, 3 graduate student senators, and 3 senators-at-large. A Senator's term lasts one academic year, starting in the fall.
Senator Requirements
  • Senators must attend weekly SGA meetings (Mondays @ 7pm).
  • Senators are strongly encouraged to attend the annual Student Leadership Conference.
  • Senators must attend SGA Training Retreat in the Fall (September 9-10).

Senator Qualifications
  • Senators must observe the following requirements:
    1. Be a member of the class of the Senate Seat for which they are running, according to number of credit hours at the time of election.
    2. Maintain a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher.
    3. Be in good standing with the University, i.e. not be on academic or disciplinary probation.
    4. Be a full-time student at East Texas Baptist University.
  • Senators-at-Large must observe the following requirements:
    1. Maintain a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher.
    2. Be in good standing with the University, i.e. not be on academic or disciplinary probation.
    3. Be a student at East Texas Baptist University.
Senator Duties
  • All Senators are required to:
    1. Attend all meetings of the Student Senate. Only absences approved by the Senate shall be excused. The second unexcused absence will result in censure, and the third unexcused absence will be cause for impeachment.
    2. Serve on at least one Student Government Association committee.
    3. Work at least one office hour per week. Two missed office hours shall be considered an unexcused absence.
  • The Student Senate shall have full authority and power to:
    1. Make Student Government Association budget appropriations.
    2. Approve official proposals to be submitted to the University Cabinet.
    3. Sponsor events and programs which support and enrich the campus community.
    4. Enact, amend, and repeal By-Laws for the Student Government Association.
    5. Grant organization charters (as outlined in the ETBU Policies and Procedures Handbook).
    6. Do anything necessary and proper to carry out the aforementioned powers as long as its actions do not contradict the Student Government Association Constitution or By-Laws.
