East Texas Baptist University hosted the 10th Anniversary Presidential Gala, a special event celebrating a decade of faithful leadership by Dr. J. Blair Blackburn as President of ETBU. Held on Friday, April 5, at the Rogers Spiritual Life Center, the Gala brought together university leaders, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and community members to honor God’s work through Dr. Blackburn’s transformative leadership on the University. Through the generosity of sponsors and attendees, the event raised more than $400,000 in support of ETBU student scholarships, continuing the University’s mission to invest in Christ-centered education and student success.
Since assuming the presidency in 2015, Dr. Blackburn has led ETBU with unwavering dedication to its Kingdom mission, fostering academic excellence, spiritual growth, and athletic achievement. Under his impactful servant leadership, the University has experienced remarkable growth in enrollment, academic offerings, campus facilities, and community enhancement.
"A decade of leadership and service at ETBU is not just a milestone, but a testament to the vision, faith, and dedication that have transformed this university and its community," Mike Arnold, Vice Chair, ETBU Board of Trustees, said. "The leadership of Dr. Blackburn has been nothing short of inspiring. His commitment to service and faith has ignited a fire on this campus that will burn brightly for years to come."
The evening included a special tribute highlighting institutional achievements and impact during Dr. Blackburn's tenure, performances by the Department of Music and Theater Arts, and personal testimonies from those who witnessed his work firsthand. Attendees also enjoyed a dinner reception and an opportunity to reflect on the University's continued success and bright future.
"Under Dr. Blackburn's leadership, we've not only seen growth in the physical structures of ETBU, but a profound spiritual renewal that has made this university a beacon of hope and education," Desirae Bradley, Residence Life Director, said. "He has always led with conviction and care. He doesn't just encourage others in their faith; he leads by example, making decisions that honor God and transform this institution."
Over the past decade, ETBU has seen significant advancements under Dr. Blackburn's visionary leadership. The University expanded its academic programs to include new graduate and undergraduate degrees, enhancing opportunities for students pursuing careers in ministry, healthcare, education, and the sciences. ETBU acquired B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary in June 2024, marking a historic milestone in the university’s commitment to graduate theological educational and ministry preparation. With approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the merger of Carroll Seminary into the University enhances ETBU's academic offerings, positioning it as a doctoral degree-granting institution while preserving the mission and legacy of B. H. Carroll. Additionally, major investments in campus infrastructure, including new residence halls, academic buildings, and athletic facilities, have elevated the student experience and positioned ETBU for continued growth.
"Dr. Blackburn answered his call," Dr. E. Leon Carter, ETBU Board of Trustees member, said. "Many of us don't do that; we answer the world's calling, but he answered God's call. He's unwavering in his commitment and on fire for this University and community. Dr. Blackburn's public face is just like his private face. He lives out the Gospel in everything he does. He's not just a hearer of the Word; he's a doer."
Beyond campus development, Dr. Blackburn championed community engagement and global outreach initiatives. The Tiger Athletic Mission Experience (TAME) and the Global Study and Serve programs have provided student-athletes with opportunities to go on mission trips worldwide. The University's Neighborhood Renewal Initiative and the downtown development of Synergy Park strengthened partnerships with local businesses, churches, and organizations and broadened ETBU's impact in Marshall and East Texas.
"Dr. Blackburn has walked and, if we're honest, sprinted not with perfection, but with perseverance," Scott McCurdy, Associate Vice President for Enrollment and Administrative Affairs, said. "Christ has used him to build His Kingdom, spread His Gospel, and bring revival and transformation in his wake. He brought change with paint and plaster, bricks and mortar, lawn care and healthcare, sidewalks and gardens, houses and classrooms, real tangible change. Dr. Blackburn is an instrumental agent of change and innovation in a time of complacency and conformity. He has changed this University, this city, and Christian higher education for the better."
Dr. Blackburn's commitment to student success, servant leadership, and institutional advancement left an indelible mark on ETBU. At the conclusion of the gala, Dr. Blackburn addressed attendees and expressed his gratitude for ETBU.
"Each of you has loved us," Dr. Blackburn said. "The Marshall community has embraced us. Our East Texas families welcomed us back home to the Piney Woods. It has been an incredible journey of transformation for us at ETBU. The truth is, I needed ETBU more than it ever needed me. God transformed my life and work through East Texas Baptist.”
Blackburn reflected, “Tonight is a celebration of God's faithfulness over ETBU. Paul says to the church at Thessalonica that ‘the One who calls is faithful, and He will do it.’ And I am so grateful to a faithful God who called us here to serve Him. He has been faithful across the generations of this institution. And God continues to be faithful as we follow His calling on our lives to seek Him and to seek His righteousness. Yes, when you serve the Lord Jesus, His favor shines upon you. He has and He does, and I'm so thankful for what He has done in the life of East Texas Baptist University.”
