Tiger Athletics: Weekend Action By Volleyball, Football & Soccer

VOLLEYBALL: TYLER, Texas (10/17/15) - For the fifth time in as many matches, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team won via sweep as it topped Howard Payne University, 3-0. Playing on Saturday in its third and final match as part of the American Southwest Conference Crossover Tournament hosted by University of Texas-Tyler, ETBU (20-3, 8-2 ASC) bested Howard Payne (1-17, 1-9 ASC) by set scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-18.

For the match, ETBU had a team attacking percentage of .313. In comparison, Howard Payne hit .067 as a team.

Mallory Sanders totaled 11 kills with zero attack errors to go along with five digs, two total blocks and a pair of service aces. Britni Mosher had eight kills, two total blocks and two service aces. Alexis Zolan finished with 13 assists, while Reighanna Guzman contributed 10. Adaeze Elonu chipped in seven kills and four total blocks, and Hannah Jones totaled a match-leading 18 digs.

For Howard Payne, Micah Cisneroz and Shelbie Harry contributed seven kills apiece. Katie Schulte (11) and Cheyanne Lovelady (10) both contributed double-digit assists.

ETBU competes next at University of Texas Dallas in a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday.

ETBU High Potent Offense Scores 51 Points
FOOTBALL: BROWNWOOD, Texas (10/18/15) - An offensive tone for the game was set by East Texas Baptist University from the very first play from scrimmage when Kendall Roberson jolted 65-yards for a touchdown taking a 51-13 American Southwest Conference win over Howard Payne University. ETBU put up a program best 694 yards of total offense and moved to 2-0 in ASC play for the first time since 2009.

"Our boys played extremely hard today and executed the game plan," says head coach Joshua Eargle. "I'm proud of them. It's been a long time since we have won in Brownwood."

Roberson finished the day with four total touchdowns rushing for three and catching another tying his career-high for rushing touchdowns. It was the sixth time in his career he has rushed for over 100 yards finishing with 164 yards. He had touchdown runs of 65-yards, three-yards, and four-yards along with a 16-yard reception.

Tyler Bates came away with 158 yards receiving and one touchdown. It was his 11th time that Bates has had 100 yards or more receiving in his career. He also caught a 38-yard pass for his 10th touchdown of the year. Jourdan McNeill added a touchdown and 56 yards. Derek Ledet also had a career-game with 94 yards receiving. Josh Warbington went 22-of-24 for 378 yards and two passing touchdowns.

Kiounis Williams led the team with seven tackles while Verry Jackson and Jarrell had their first career interceptions at ETBU.

After taking a quick 7-0 lead, Howard Payne kicked a 40-yard field goal to come within four, 7-3. ETBU then scored 41 straight points for a 48-3 lead. ETBU only had seven points in the first quarter and Howard Payne made it a game until they allowed 24 unanswered points in the second quarter ending the half behind, 28-3. Bates, Roberson, and McNeill all scored touchdowns and Ryan Travis had a 36-yard field goal.

ETBU scored 17 more points in the third quarter on a Roberson pass and run and then an 18-yard field goal by Travis. Roberson caught an 16-yard pass first from Warbington and then rushed for this fourth overall touchdown of the day for a 45-3 lead. Travis finished out the scoring in the quarter with his second made field goal of the day from 18-yards.

Howard Payne put 10 points on the board in the fourth quarter and Travis nailed a 30-yard field goal finishing out ETBU's scoring.

Overall, ETBU had 266 yards rushing and 428 yards passing for 694 yards of total offense. ETBU held Howard Payne to just 346 yards of total offense and 13 points.

ETBU will host Belhaven University at 6:00 p.m. on October 24th in the homecoming match next week.


Tiger Soccer Drops Match At Howard Payne, 1-0
SOCCER (M): BROWNWOOD, Texas (10/17/15) - An early first-half goal turned out to be the difference as the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team fell to host Howard Payne University by a 1-0 margin on Saturday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field. The defeat brings ETBU to 2-11-0 overall and 2-4-0 in American Southwest Conference competition. With the victory, Howard Payne ups its overall record to 3-7-1 and 1-5-0 in ASC match play.

Only a second into the 11th minute, Howard Payne scored courtesy of a Tracer Moore goal. In the opening half alone, ETBU fired off 16 shots, including shots on-goal by Pablo Jaimes, Gustavo Vasquez, Hugo Orta, Brett Forbus, Matthew Argenbright, and Jordan Burke. In contrast, Howard Payne fired four shots in that same 45 minutes, but held that 1-0 advantage at the halftime break.

The second half featured eight shots by ETBU, while Howard Payne fired off seven shots. The final 45 minutes saw Argenbright, David Jackson, Forbus and Jose Vega each rip a shot on-goal, but ETBU could not find the back of the net. In goal for ETBU, Juan Perales made four saves in 88-plus minutes before giving way to Ryan Hammond. Between the posts for Howard Payne, Allan Chehadi stopped 14 shots.

ETBU is back in action on Friday when it hosts University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m.

Lady Tigers Fall to HPU, 1-0
SOCCER (W): BROWNWOOD, Texas (10/17/15) - Playing in its second match in three days, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team lost by a 1-0 margin against host Howard Payne University on Saturday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field. ETBU drops to 4-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in American Southwest Conference matches. Meanwhile Howard Payne goes to 3-6-2 and 2-4-1 within ASC competition.

ETBU possessed the ball often during the first 30 minutes of play, firing off the match's first eight shots with four of them on-goal. Howard Payne would, however, capitalize for the lone goal of the afternoon late in the 35th minute. Miranda Rice serviced a ball from the near-side sideline to teammate Rachel Crane who kicked it home. By the time the match reached halftime, ETBU trailed Howard Payne, 1-0, but held a 10-to-2 edge in terms of shots.

In the second half, ETBU continued applying pressure, including shots on-goal by Erin Miller, Amber Pless, Chase Swann and Alexis Smith, but to no avail. During the second half, ETBU again emerged with the advantage in shots, this time by a 10-to-6 margin. ETBU goalkeeper Christina Salas made four saves, while Howard Payne keeper Kelsie Piland stopped 12 shots.

ETBU returns to action on Friday when it hosts University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 1 p.m.
