ETBU Spreads Christmas Joy Worldwide Through Operation Christmas Child

November 26, 2024

East Texas Baptist University participated in its ninth annual Operation Christmas Child, an outreach program organized by Samaritan’s Purse. This ministry involves filling shoeboxes with small toys, school supplies, hygiene products, and other items sent to children worldwide as Christmas gifts and tangible reminders of God’s love for them. This year, ETBU also served as a designated drop-off location, inviting the surrounding community to join in spreading joy and hope.

The initiative is a cherished tradition on campus, as students, faculty, and staff unite to shop, pack, and pray for children who will receive the gifts and the families they represent. Volunteers carefully select toys, clothing, and necessities for children aged two to fourteen, ensuring each shoebox contains thoughtful and meaningful items.

During National Collection Week, all 27 of ETBU’s athletic teams and various student groups and organizations across campus come together to pack the boxes. The packing events provide an opportunity to foster fellowship and a deeper connection among the ETBU community.

“Operation Christmas Child is an incredible service event where we, as a team, are able to spread joy to those in need around the world through the act of giving,” senior men’s soccer player Bruno Palmieri said. “This is definitely one of my favorite events of the year because I know that we provide the same joy and love for a child we have experienced on so many Christmas mornings.”

The outreach effort has grown each year, with ETBU packing over 370 boxes this month. With additional Operation Christmas Child donations made by community members, the grand total came to 3,367 boxes packed. Students continue to express how participating in Operation Christmas Child impacts their understanding of generosity and the true meaning of Christmas.

“This was my fourth year participating in Operation Christmas Child,” Multicultural Affairs Graduate Assistant Nakayla Holloway said. “Each year, I eagerly anticipate this project because it has truly taught me the essence of giving with a servant’s heart. While the world may change, the message of the cross remains constant. Bringing hope of the Gospel to millions is exactly what Operation Christmas Child accomplishes. It’s a profound blessing to serve others with the community God has allowed me to build here on the Hill.”
