ETBU Student Haylie Stum Receives CIC/UPS Scholarship

October 3, 2023

East Texas Baptist University announces that Haylie Stum, an undergraduate student from Cypress, Texas, majoring in Sports Communications, has been chosen to receive the CIC/UPS Scholarship, generously granted by the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT) in collaboration with their national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, D.C.

"Being chosen for this scholarship reaffirms that the school I chose to attend respects and trusts the work that I am doing,” Stum said. “I am so blessed that ETBU has chosen to invest in my success and future. This scholarship will help further my education as I pursue a degree in Mass Communications with a specialization in Sports Communications. With this scholarship, I will be able to enhance the quality of my journalistic work both in and out of the classroom."

Stum, who has already made her mark at ETBU as a member of the Tiger Softball Team and a student worker in the University Marketing Department, also excels as a sideline reporter on the ETBU+ Network during Tiger sporting events. Her passion for journalism has garnered significant recognition, culminating in her being named the Texas Association of Journalism Educators Journalist of the Year in 2023.

Reflecting on her transformative experience at ETBU, Stum shared, "In my short time at ETBU, I have learned the true definition of a Christian servant leader. I feel I have matured as a person and in my relationship with the Lord, being more driven by love and faithfulness. This will undoubtedly translate into my post-college pursuits, and I hope to take the skillset ETBU provides me with into the world to make a positive impact."

Nationally, CIC, through the CIC/UPS Educational Endowment, provided more than $1.4 million in student scholarships to support student success at private colleges and universities.

“We are grateful for the ongoing financial support of the CIC/UPS Educational Endowment, which has provided more than $2 million in scholarship funds to Texas students since 1985,” Elizabeth Puthoff, president of the ICUT Foundation said. “The generosity of this long-term investment has enabled hundreds of Texans with financial need to further their education at one of our private, nonprofit member schools.”
