Tiger Athletics: Softball Sweeps HPU, Baseball Wins Series with McMurry & Track & Field at UT-Tyler Meet

March 5, 2016

SOFTBALL: BROWNWOOD, Texas (3/5/16) – Doubling in the game winning run in the top of the seventh inning, Linzie Lewis put the East Texas Baptist University softball team on top, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Lady Jacket Field over Howard Payne University. The victory wraps up a three-game series sweep for ETBU, which goes to 10-3 overall and 8-1 against American Southwest Conference competition.

Lewis plated the tie-breaking run for ETBU in the seventh and final inning, doubling down the right field line to score JJ Mitchell. In the bottom half, ETBU pitcher Raquel Tello worked around a two-out base on balls and retired the final batter on a fly ball out to center fielder Lindsey Vasquez.

Tello (6-0) earned the win in the pitcher’s circle throwing the full seven innings. She surrendered five hits, one run and a walk. Tello also struck out three.

Prior to the seventh inning, the other two runs came in the fifth. With one away, Vasquez reached base safely on an infield hit. After stealing her team-leading 10th base, Vasquez advanced to third on a Lewis groundout. Jayme Perez then hit a two-out RBI single to bring in Vasquez for a 1-0 ETBU lead. During the series, Perez hit safely in all three games and also drove in a run in each game.

Howard Payne would counter, however, in the bottom half to tie the score up at 1-1. Pinch hitter Brittany Ponder had a two-out double to right-center, and then pinch runner Kodi Glosson scored from second on Gaby Muniz’ RBI single to left-center.

ETBU plays next on March 11 against Ithaca (N.Y.) College. The game will be ETBU’s first as part of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s NCAA Division III Leadoff Classic to be played in Columbus, Georgia.

#TIGERSWIN: ETBU Sweep HPU in First 2 Games
SOFTBALL: BROWNWOOD, Texas (3/4/16) – Sweeping the double header on the first day of competition vs. Howard Payne University, East Texas Baptist University improved to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the ASC. ETBU squeaked out a win in game one, 4-3, and then took game two, 5-3. Raquel Tello and Kelly Jo McLendon each received the win.

Game One: ETBU 4, Howard Payne 3

In game one, ETBU went ahead by three runs, 4-1, after four-and-a-half innings. Lindsey Vasquez led off the game with a bunt single and then stole second base. Later on with two away, Lacey Lindsey hit an RBI double to right-center to put ETBU in the lead, 1-0. Further on in the top of the fourth, an Alexis Padilla sacrifice fly brought home Jessica Bowden as ETBU reclaimed the lead, 2-1.

ETBU scored a pair of runs in the fifth with Jayme Perez contributing a two-run single that plated Linzie Lewis and Vasquez and gave the team a 4-1 advantage. Howard Payne scored twice in the fifth and threatened to add more in the sixth. ETBU pitcher Raquel Tello escaped a two-on, one-out jam, however, to preserve the team’s narrow 4-3 lead. In all, Tello retired the final five batters that she faced.

Tello (5-0) pitched the full duration, her fourth complete-game performance in as many starts this spring. She threw seven innings, allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned). Tello walked one and struck out none.

Game Two: ETBU 5, Howard Payne 3

The nightcap resulted in another ETBU win as the team scored once in each of the final three innings to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Trailing by a 3-2 score after four innings, ETBU drew even in the fifth via a Lindsey run-scoring single that brought home Vasquez and tied game two at 3-3. One inning later, Katy Hill doubled down the right field line to plate Trina Deyo for the tie-breaking run, 4-3. ETBU scored the final run of the day in the seventh on an RBI double off the bat of Lindsey to score Perez all the way from first base.

With a runner on first base and one out, Perez entered the pitcher’s circle in relief of Kelly Jo McLendon in the bottom of the seventh. Perez struck out a batter swinging and then ETBU catcher McKenzie Cain threw out a Howard Payne base runner attempting to steal second base for the final out.

McLendon (1-3) earned her first win of the season after entering in relief of game two starter Jade Jones. McLendon pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed one hit, one run and three walks. Meanwhile, Perez earned her first save this spring.

ETBU and Howard Payne close the three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a single game scheduled for a noontime first pitch.

ETBU Gains Split with McM
BASEBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (3/5/16) – Splitting the double header at Woods Field, East Texas Baptist University took game one for their 11th win of the year but fell in the rubber match to McMurry University. ETBU made it two in row vs. the Warhawks with a 7-2 win in the first game but the fell, 3-2, in the final game of the series.

In game one, ETBU used three home runs and a sacrifice fly to beat McMurry 7-2. Josh Warbington (4 RBI), Zach Compton (1 RBI), and Kameron Sumrall (1 RBI) would each hit a home run in the game. Dynas Doud would also have a hit and an RBI in the game. On the mound, Kyle Loson got his third win of the season by going five innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out four and walking three. Jimmy Russo would get the save pitching two innings allowing one home run.

However, in game two, ETBU fell 3-2 in a nine-inning affair. Tyler Bates and Warbington would each homer for ETBU for the only two runs of the game. Connor Combs also have two hits to lead the team. Cody Pierce took the loss by going 6.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four. Chad Boudreaux (one hit, one run, two Ks) and Russo (no runs, no hits, one strikeout) would each pitch an inning and a third to finish the day.

Game 1 – ETBU 7, McMurry 2

McMurry would score their first run in the first inning when they would load the bases and bring in a run when a player was hit by the pitch. ETBU’s defense would prevent more trouble as they would get Loson out of the jam. For the second game in a row, ETBU would have back to back homers as Compton and Sumrall would do it this game to put the Tigers on top 2-1. In the third inning, Doud would deliver a sacrifice fly to score Dylan Sumpter making it 3-1.

Loson would get out of the jam in the fifth inning as McMurry loaded the bases but failed to score. In the sixth, ETBU loaded the bases as Warbington drilled a grand slam home run to make it 7-1. Russo would come in to pitch and despite giving up a solo homer in the seventh, he was able to finish the job and give ETBU their eleventh win of the season.

Game 2 – McMurry 3, ETBU 2

For the second game in a row, McMurry struck first with a run in the first inning on an RBI single. It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the fifth inning when Warbington connected for a home run to tie the game at one. After a scoreless sixth inning, McMurry took advantage of a couple of errors by ETBU in the seventh inning to score two and grab a 3-1 lead. When Bates homered in the eighth, ETBU trailed 3-2. ETBU had the tying run at second base, but they were unable to drive him in as McMurry hung on for the win in the ninth inning.

ETBU will host Texas Dallas next weekend in an ASC series at Woods Field starting on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
