WEEKEND TIGER ATHLETICS: Big 4th Quarter Ends 8-Year Drought vs. LC

FOOTBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (9/26/15) - Fourth Quarter dominance by the East Texas Baptist University offense combined with the strong defensive effort canned Louisiana College's thought of extending their winning streak over the Tigers (0-3/0-1), 44-34. ETBU scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win in the American Southwest Conference opener.

"Our offense can almost big play you to death," says head coach Joshua Eargle. "Tyler Bates had a phenomenal night with 274 yards receiving and two touchdowns and it seems that all he does is catch touchdowns and make big plays and Kendall Roberson ran really strong. All that means is that our offensive line is play phenomenally."

Tyler Bates caught a career-high 274 yards just missing the game record for receiving by three yards and added to his NCAA Division III leading touchdowns with two more. He now has 11 touchdowns on the year and five in the last two games. Roberson toted the ball 27 times for 173 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He has now recorded two rushing touchdowns in the last three games each. Josh Warbington finished the night going 17-of-26 for 321 yards and two touchdowns.

The win is the first for ETBU since 2007 when they won in Pineville, La., 27-23, on October 27. This win also starts ETBU off at 1-0 in the American Southwest Conference which is a first since 2009 when they went 2-0.

Down 24-20 heading into the fourth quarter after not scoring any points in the third quarter, ETBU's offense exploded for 24 unanswered points to take the win, 44-34. ETBU had the ball five times in the fourth quarter and scored three touchdowns and had one field goal with the last possession ending in victory formation. After only producing 18 yards of offense in the third quarter, the ETBU offense unleashed for 178 yards and three touchdowns.

Dominic Haggerty put the momentum back in ETBU's favor after Louisiana College tied the game up at 27 at the 10:19 mark in the fourth quarter. Haggerty took the ensuing kickoff 92-yards on a kickoff return touchdown to put ETBU up for good, 34-27. Ryan Travis connected on a 33-yard field goal at the 6:08 mark making it 37-27, and then Roberson rushed from two yards out for his second touchdown of the night with 2:38 left to play putting the ball game way, 44-27. Louisiana College scored with 1:29 left in the game but didn't get the on-side kick as ETBU ran out the clock for the win.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half. Bates took an 80-yard reception to the house for the first score of the game at the 9:51 mark making it 6-0. Louisiana College's defense picked off a Warbington pass at the six-yard line to go ahead in the game, 7-6, early in the first quarter. Roberson gave ETBU the lead back at the 2:52 mark when he ran from 20-yards out for the 13-7 lead. After Louisiana College hit a field goal, Jourdan McNeill romped in from 27-yards out for a 20-10 advantage at the half.

C.J. Johnson led the team with 10 tackles and two sacks. David Jaynes produced two sacks on the night for 15 yards.

ETBU's offense produced 547 yards of total offense with 321 yards in the air and 226 on the ground. ETBU held LC to 442 yards of offense. ETBU's defense forced two turnovers and recovered one.

Off next week with their bye week, ETBU will next play at home on October 10th hosting Texas Lutheran at 6:00 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL: BELTON, Texas (9/27/15) - On the heels splitting a pair of matches on Friday, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team finished the American Southwest Conference Crossover Tournament by topping Hardin-Simmons University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon inside of the Mayborn Campus Center. Set scores for ETBU were 25-22, 25-17 and 25-14.

ETBU improves to 12-3 overall and 3-2 in ASC match play. Hardin-Simmons drops to 7-7 and 3-2 in ASC competition. For the match, ETBU finished with a team attacking percentage of .350, while Hardin-Simmons hit .019.

Mallory Sanders totaled 10 kills, seven digs, four blocks and a pair of service aces for ETBU. Reighanna Guzman contributed a dozen assists, nine digs and four service aces, while Alexis Zolan chipped in seven assists and eight digs. Adaeze Elonu totaled five kills and seven blocks.

For Hardin-Simmons, Morgan Prince had eight kills, five assists, five digs, two blocks and four service aces. Three players tallied double-digit digs for Hardin-Simmons, paced by Lauren Wish who had 13.

ETBU completes this current stretch of five-straight ASC matches on Oct. 3 when it plays at LeTourneau University with first serve slated for 1 p.m.

ETBU Splits on First Day of ASC Crossover
VOLLEYBALL: MARSHALL, Texas(9/26/15) - Splitting their American Southwest Conference crossover matches on day one, East Texas Baptist University won their first match of the day over Concordia-Texas in three sets before falling to host Mary Hardin-Baylor. ETBU is now 11-3 on the year.

ETBU started the day with a three-set victory over Concordia-Texas, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18, for their 11th win of the year. Kailey Cavanaugh, Bailee Moore, and Mallory Sanders all had 10 kills. Reighanna Guzman added 19 assists and Alexis Zolan had 15 assists. Hannah Jones posted 19 digs. ETBU hit .238 in set three for their best set and had a .202 hitting percentage overall.

In their final match of the day ETBU fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor in four sets, 25-14, 21-25, 18-25, 18-25. Sanders had 14 kills and 11 digs while Elonu posted 11 kills. Hannah Jones had 12 digs and Alexis Zolan posted 22 assists. ETBU hit .252 overall with 47 kills. 

ETBU will face Hardin-Simmons at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in their final match of the crossover.

ETBU Competes Against Tough Regional Competition in Tennessee
CROSS COUNTRY (M): MEMPHIS, Tenn. (9/27/15) - In a field of 199 runners at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee, the East Texas Baptist University men's cross country team finished 18th out of 25 teams with 483 points. Landon Price was the first ETBU runner to finish in the top 70 with a 68th place finish and a time of 28:15.

Ian Spencer finished five spots and 20 seconds behind Price while Beau Billings (132nd place) finished at 30:26. Ramiro Mendez (144th), Kevin Martinez (167th), and Seth Powers (175th) finished with times of 30:58, 32:27, and 33:31 respectively.

ETBU finished just 16 points behind Texas-Dallas, but they were able to finish 211 points ahead of Ozarks. They also finished ahead of Division I Arkansas-Pine Bluff by 166 points.

East Texas Baptist will be hosting the Texas DIII Championships this Saturday at 9 am.

CROSS COUNTRY (W): MEMPHIS, Tenn. (9/27/15) - Looking to continue their success this season, East Texas Baptist University finished 18th out of 25 teams with 511 points in the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. As with her previous races, Shelby Taylor was the first East Texas Baptist runner to cross at a time of 25:13, good enough for 66th place.

Shelby Sparks was the next runner to finish for ETBU with a 129th place finish and a time of 27:47. Chloe Hudson (29:19), Hannah Crisp (31:00), Courtney Stevens (32:14), and Sarah Brotzman (32:29) all finished in places of 145th, 151st, 155th, and 156th respectively. Victoria Guttierez came in with a 160th place finish, which involved a time of 32:55 while Caroline Lowe rounded the group with a 164th place finish and a time of 34:24.

ETBU finished 98 points ahead of Division I Arkansas Pine-Bluff and other NAIA programs.

ETBU will play the role of hosts as they will compete in the Texas DIII Championships this Saturday at 9 am in Marshall.

#TIGERSWIN: Men's Soccer Claims First Victory
SOCCER (M): MARSHALL, Texas (9/25/15) - In their American Southwest Conference opener, the East Texas Baptist University (1-6, 1-0 ASC) men's soccer team pulled through for a 2-0 win against LeTourneau University (Texas) on Friday night at Cornish Field. Gustavo Vasquez netted both goals helping ETBU to start the ASC schedule off 1-0.

Vasquez tallied both of the match's goals, scoring in the 12th and 36th minutes, respectively. His first goal came on a service from a teammate that he trapped, gathered in and kicked in for a 1-0 ETBU lead. He closed out the night?s scoring following a throw-in from teammate Matthew Argenbright and a quick pass from Antoine Bravo to account for the final 2-0 score.

ETBU finished the match with an 18-to-10 edge in shots and totaled an identical six corner kicks. Juan Perales stopped three saves in goal for ETBU, while LETU goalkeeper Miguel Cabrera stopped five stops.

ETBU travels to Clarksville, Arkansas, for another conference match at University of the Ozarks (Ark.) on Thursday starting at 3 p.m.

Heartbreaking Goal Sends ETBU to Defeat
SOCCER (W): MARSHALL, Texas (9/25/15) - A second-half goal by LeTourneau University (4-3, 2-0 ASC) positioned them for the victory over East Texas Baptist University (1-6, 1-1 ASC), 2-1, in American Southwest Conference women's soccer action. It was all tied up at the half before LeTourneau took the lead in the 59th minute.

ETBU went ahead in the 31st minute courtesy of an unassisted goal by Stephanie Castillo. On a bouncing ball near the LETU goal, Castillo got ahold of the ball and blasted it through to push ETBU ahead, 1-0. LETU responded, however, almost exactly seven minutes later in the 38th minute. Keely Hayden passed upfield to Kennedy Keer, who kicked in the tying goal for a 1-1 score that held at intermission. In the opening half, the two teams had identical totals in both shots (6-to-6) and corner kicks (1-to-1).

The final half of play brought the tiebreaking goal as Hayden scored late in the 59th minute, beating ETBU goalkeeper Christina Salas for the 2-1 final score. Overall, LETU held a 12-to-8 edge in shots and a 4-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Salas did not record any saves as two shots were on goal for goals. LETU's Bridey Davis had three saves.

ETBU returns to action on Thursday afternoon against University of the Ozarks (Ark.) for a 1 p.m. opening kick in Clarksville, Arkansas.
