Former ETBU English Professor Henry Hood, Jr. Passes Away

MARSHALL, Texas (7/27/15) - A former East Texas Baptist University English professor Henry Hood, Jr., (63), passed away at his home on Friday, July 24, 2015. Hood taught at ETBU from 1980 2000. Funeral service will be held at at Meadowbrook Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 4:00 p.m.

He was born in Catlettsburg, Kentucky on November 4, 1951, to Henry Hood, Sr. and Fern McGlone Hood. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Donna Hood; and his brothers-in-law, Larry Overman, Thomas Allemang, Richard Osborne and Ronnie Lawhorn. 

Henry is survived by his brothers, John Hood (Gay), Kenneth Hood (Juanita) and Leonard Hood. He is also survived by his sisters, Emilie Hood, Marie Hood, Bonnie Lawhorn, Joyce Osborne, Wanda Allemang and Kathleen Overman, along with numerous other family members and friends who knew and loved him. 

Henry graduated in 1969 from Paul Blazer High School and in 1973 from Berea College. He received his master's degree from the University of Arkansas and had been working on his doctorate degree at his death. He was an English Professor at ETBU for many years until 2000, at which time he accepted a Professor position with Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, Texas. 

He attended First United Methodist Church for many years where he sang in the Chancel Choir under the direction of Bob Spencer. 

Visitation for Henry will be held at Meadowbrook Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, from 2 - 4 pm. Funeral Service will be held at Meadowbrook Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 4 pm. Neal-Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg, KY will be in charge of funeral service and interment in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland, Kentucky on Friday, July 31, 2015. 

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials to be made in Henrys name to Berea College, Berea, Kentucky.
