MARSHALL, Texas (1/26/15) - Reaching out to help the Marshall community the East Texas Baptist University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee had the annual "Make A Change" night raising funds and getting donations for Mission Marshall and the Clothes Depot. This is an event sponsored by the American Southwest Conference every year and the SAAC delegates run the event.
"The SAAC delegates did a great job of promoting the event at the game on Thursday night vs. Louisiana College," says sponsor and Director of Sports Information Adam P. Ledyard. "All the teams available helped to set up, take donations, and run the team competition to see who could bring in the most points."
In the end, ETBU SAAC raised $230, received two boxes full of canned goods, and nine bags of clothing. The canned goods and financial donation will go to Mission Marshall while the clothes will be donated to the Clothes Depot.
One of the events that took place was the "White Out." The first 100 students that came and gave a donation received a white t-shirt. The t-shirt had the NCAA Division III logo on the front and the ETBU logo on the back.
As far as the team competition, the softball team ran away with the points finishing with 620 points. The soccer team was a distant second with 125 points. Points were given by one-point for each dollar given and for canned good and two-points per piece of clothing.
"The athletes really gave for this event as it has been the best in three years since I have been here," says Ledyard.
A check will be presented to Misty Scott in chapel in the coming month for the donations received.
ETBU Has 34 Fall Athletes on ASC All-Academic Team
AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE: RICHARDSON, Texas (1/16/15) - East Texas Baptist University had 34 student-athletes earn American Southwest Conference All-Academic awards for their fall semester.
Women's soccer recorded the most for ETBU with eight overall along with football on the men's side. The volleyball team had seven players earn the award which was second best in the volleyball category. Men's cross country had five and women's cross country four while men's soccer had two make the team.
To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must be classified academically as a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student during the competition season and have been in attendance and completed at least one academic year (two consecutive semesters) at their institution. They must also have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as certified at the conclusion of the academic semester in which the ASC sport championship is held.
