ETBU Mourns the Loss of Student Darrell Veitch

MARSHALL, Texas (1/20/15) - Students, faculty, and staff of East Texas Baptist University are mourning the loss of pre-nursing student Darrell Veitch, 39, of Diana, Texas. Darrell passed away on January 17, 2015. 

Memorial services for Darrell will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Simmons Hill Baptist Church located east of Diana at 4221 Simmons Road with Rev. Gabriel Knopp officiating.  

"The Department of Nursing was saddened to hear the news that our pre-nursing student, Darrell Veitch, passed away this weekend," said Dr. Rebekah Grigsby, ETBU Dean of the Groner School of Professional Studies (Department of Nursing). "We enjoyed him as a student and admired his commitment and passion to care for others as a future nurse. Darrell's warm smile and friendly spirit will not be forgotten.  We uplift and embrace his family with our prayers."  

According to University Chaplain and Vice President for Spiritual Development Dr. Scott Bryant, ETBU "will be holding a memorial service for Darrell Veitch on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Lampsato Chapel." The chapel is located on the second floor of the Ornelas Student Center.   

Darrell was born July 25, 1975, in Tyler, Texas, to Ed and Marilyn Veitch. He graduated from Quitman High School and Northeast Texas Community College. He was a CNA at Buckner Westminster Place and was attending East Texas Baptist University, pursuing his Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

Darrell attended Simmons Hill Baptist Church where he was a deacon and sang in the choir. His life was his church, family, cars, and music. Darrell loved work, his friends at Buckner and at Holly House. He was a devoted father who was full of integrity and always smiling and laughing.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife and companion of 18 years, Angela Veitch; parents, Ed and Marilyn Veitch; sons, Dakota Veitch and Derrick Veitch; daughter, Gabby Veitch; sister, Edie Newberry; grandmother, Nettie Veitch; best friend, Brie Knopp; and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Veitch.
