B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary appoints David Butts as Director of Admissions

April 30, 2026

B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary at East Texas Baptist University has named David Butts as Director of Admissions, bringing nearly four decades of ministry experience, leadership, and discipleship training to the role.

Butts joins Carroll Seminary following a distinguished 38-year ministry career serving churches across Texas, most recently as Minister to Children & Families at First Baptist Church of Arlington, where he served from 2002 to 2026. Throughout his ministry, he has been recognized for his commitment to developing strong discipleship programs, equipping volunteers, and fostering spiritual growth among children and families.

“David Butts comes with a reputation that truly precedes him as an outstanding minister to children, families, and the broader church community at First Baptist Arlington and beyond,” Dean of B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary David Ritsema said. “Throughout a long and faithful ministry, he has demonstrated not only professional excellence but also a genuine pastoral heart. He has consistently cared for people, invested in relationships, and served others with compassion and integrity.”

In his new role, Butts will lead recruitment and admissions efforts, working closely with prospective students, churches, and ministry partners to expand access to theological education and support the Seminary’s Christ-centered mission.

A graduate of Howard Payne University, Butts earned a Bachelor of Arts in Practical Theology in 1985. He later completed a Master of Religious Education with a concentration in Childhood Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1991.

In addition to his church leadership roles, Butts has been actively involved with the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT), where he has served in numerous capacities, including as a Discipleship Collective Team member, conference leader, and keynote speaker. He has led training events and workshops across the state, contributed to Vacation Bible School curriculum development, and served as chairman of the Memorials Committee for the 2024 BGCT Annual Meeting.

His ministry experience includes directing large-scale children’s camps with more than 700 participants, leading Vacation Bible Schools with over 1,000 attendees, and equipping hundreds of volunteers and ministry leaders. He has also been instrumental in mentoring staff, developing strategic ministry initiatives, and creating programs that strengthen families and encourage lifelong faith formation.

“As I transition into my new role as Dean, I am especially pleased that David Butts will be stepping into a role I have deeply valued: connecting with prospective students, building relationships, and thoughtfully guiding them from first inquiry to enrollment and beyond,” Dr. Ritsema said. “Few people are better suited for that work. His relational gifts, pastoral spirit, and genuine care for people make him uniquely prepared to serve future students and help them discern their calling. I have every confidence that David will be a tremendous blessing in this new season of service.”
