On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, East Texas Baptist University President J. Blair Blackburn was presented with the Veretta and Jesse E. Rider, Sr. Leadership Award for Community Impact at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn in Tyler, Texas. The event brought together community leaders, entrepreneurs, and executives to celebrate individuals who have contributed significantly to the East Texas region.
Dr. Blackburn was recognized for his dedication to the community, particularly in Marshall, Tyler, and the East Texas region. The award honors individuals who have shown exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment to improving the standard of living and economic development in their communities.
"I am deeply humbled to receive this award," Dr. Blackburn said. "It's a reflection of the collective efforts of everyone at East Texas University and the incredible communities we serve. Together, we are building a brighter future for East Texas, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this shared vision."
The luncheon was a fundraiser for the Veretta and Jesse E. Rider Fine and Performing Arts Centre, located inside the African American Museum in Tyler, a historic venue that was once a fire station. The center is named after the Riders, a couple celebrated as pillars of the community. Veretta and Jesse E. Rider have long been influential figures in the region, with Veretta known for her dedication to helping single mothers and their families. At the same time, Jesse has had a distinguished career as an educator and business owner. Their lasting impact has left a powerful legacy in Tyler and beyond.
In addition to Dr. Blackburn's award, Mr. James I. Perkins, President and Chairman of Citizens 1st Bank in Tyler, and his wife, Margaret, were named the 2024 Persons of the Year in recognition of their enduring contributions to the community.
The event featured a moving rendition of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech by Pastor Nickalous McGrew and a keynote address from Michael Coleman, a News Anchor at KLTV, who shared insights on the importance of community engagement and leadership.
"Leaders don't get defeated," Coleman said. "When they do face defeat, they figure out how to do it better next time. It's not about giving up after a setback but finding a way to learn, grow, and improve. A true leader knows that failure is just a stepping stone toward success. They refuse to be beaten. They refuse to be turned down, and that's why they are where they are today. That's why they're so instrumental in our community. They've faced setbacks and challenges, but they've kept going, and their perseverance has made all the difference in the lives of those around them."
