ASC: RICHARDSON, Texas (12/7/15) - For the second time this year East Texas Baptist University women's basketball player April Leonard has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week. Leonard guided ETBU to a 2-0 week and a 1-0 start in the ASC.
She averaged 20.5 points per game in helping ETBU improve to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in Ornelas Gym. She had her third 20+ scoring game this season with 24 points vs. HSU. She scored 17 vs. McMurry on Thursday shooting .500 from the floor (6-of-12) with six assists. She made 8-of-10 free throws vs. HSU. In the last 2:08 of the game vs. HSU, she scored six of the 10 points making a three-pointer and going 3-of-4 from the FT line. With 13 seconds left and a one-point lead, she made both free throws to take a three-point lead, 77-74. She then made one-of-two FTs with five seconds left for a three-point lead, 78-75. ETBU is now 4-0 at home this year.
ETBU defeated both McMurry and Hardin-Simmons for the first time in over 10 years. ETBU last defeated HSU in 2005-06 and McMurry in 2002-03. Leonard also leads the ASC in scoring at 19.0 points per game.
