BASKETBALL (M): TYLER, Texas (12/29/15) - Competing in the University of Texas-Tyler Christmas Classic, the No. 15-ranked East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team edged Southwestern (Texas) University, 70-60, on Saturday afternoon inside of the Herrington Patriot Center. The result pushes ETBU's record to 8-1, and moves Southwestern to 3-7.
Three different ETBU players scored double figures, paced by Dylan Augustine who totaled 14 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and three steals. Junior Mitchell added 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Eric Horton had 11 points and eight rebounds. In his first start this season, Jordan Quillian chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
During the first half, the teams were neck-and-neck across the board statistically, but ETBU held a 38-35 halftime edge.
Less than five minutes into the action, Southwestern went up by an 11-6 margin following a Ryan Ogden basket. In this span, Southwestern hit five-of-eight shots from the floor with Karrey Sanders contributing five points. Meanwhile ETBU converted three-of-nine shots from the field.
A 7-2 spurt by ETBU, however, tied up at 13-13. Isaiah Thomas and Anthony Davis each scored a basket, and Augustine converted a 3-point shot to knot up the action. Southwestern would then counter with a 10-5 run to reassume a five-point edge, 23-18, with seven minutes until the half.
Later on with Southwestern still in the lead at 28-24, ETBU used a 12-2 burst to go up by six, 36-30, with 1:30 on the clock. During this particular stretch, ETBU hit five-of-seven shots from the floor, while Southwestern hit one-of-four attempts from the field and turned the ball over three times.
Ahead by a 38-35 score at halftime, ETBU would remain in the lead for the entirety of the second half and went up by as many as 13 points at 70-57 with 28 seconds remaining in regulation. In the second half, ETBU hit 40.6 percent of its shots (13-of-32), while Southwestern converted seven-of-38 shots for an 18.4 percent success rate.
For the afternoon, ETBU had a 55-to-50 advantage in rebounding.
For Southwestern, Chris Molina led all players with 21 points and six steals to go along with seven rebounds. Ogden added seven points, a game-high 11 rebounds and two steals.
ETBU competes again on Wednesday against No. 25-ranked Texas Lutheran University for a 2:30 p.m. game.
