WEEKEND TIGER ATHLETICS: Price Claims TX D3 Individual Championship; ETBU is 2nd Overall

CROSS COUNTRY (M): MARSHALL, Texas (10/3/15) - Landon Price added another title to his resume as he was the Texas Division III champion at the Texas Division III Championships hosted by East Texas Baptist University. Price finished third overall in the meet but won the Division III title as the top runner finishing in front of runners from Texas-Tyler, LeTourneau, Texas Dallas, Dallas, Hardin-Simmons, and Sul Ross State.

With his finish, he guided ETBU to a second place finish in the meet with 65 points. ETBU finished ahead of Texas Dallas by one point and was several points ahead of Dallas, Texas-Tyler, Hardin-Simmons, and Sul Ross State. LeTourneau University was the winner of the meet. On the non-Texas meet event, Wiley College won the competition.

The race was an 8k course and featured 76 runners as Price paced the team, claiming a top-five finish with a time of 27:23.90, good enough for third place. Price?s time and placing both led all NCAA Division III participants at the event. Also finishing within the top 10 for ETBU was Ian Spencer, who clocked in at 28:13.05 to place sixth. Beau Billings rounded out the three ETBU top-20 finishers, placing 20th with a finish of 29:35.81.

Also racing for ETBU were Aaron Durham (22nd; 29:55.01), Kevin Martinez (43rd; 31:45.88), Ramiro Mendez (45th; 32:25.77), and Seth Powers (50th; 32:52.61).

ETBU resumes their season on Friday at the Watson Ford Invitational. Hosted by Mississippi College, the 8k race will held in Jackson, Mississippi.

Taylor Finishes Top 10; ETBU 4th at TX D3 Meet
CROSS COUNTRY (W): MARSHALL, Texas (10/3/15) - Hosting the Texas NCAA Division III Championships on their home course, the East Texas Baptist University women's cross country team finished fourth of seven teams. Shelby Taylor was ETBU's top runner in finishing up in ninth overall in the 6K race with a time of 24:45. Her time is a new program record for the 6K.

The race was a 6k course and featured 88 competitors as ETBU had 95 points overall for the Texas Division III meet. After Taylor top 10 finish, Megan Merrill completed the course in 26:06.92 to place 20th, while Shelby Sparks clocked in at 26:56.60 to take 30th place.

Also competing for ETBU were Chloe Hudson (39th; 27:44.97), Amy Daly (46th; 28:36.26), Alyssa Cummings (47th; 28:45.19), Courtney Stevens (55th; 29:30.11), Hannah Crisp (56th; 29:31.42), Vicky Gutierrez (65th; 31:05.28), Caroline Lowe (66th; 31:07.22), and Sarah Brotzman (69th; 32:07.14).

Overall, Texas-Tyler won the Texas Division III meet while Wiley College was the top team in the non-Texas meet.

ETBU returns to action on Friday at the Watson Ford Invitational. Hosted by Mississippi College, the 6k event will held in Jackson, Mississippi.

Volleyball Victorious In Two Matches On Saturday
VOLLEYBALL: LONGVIEW, Texas (10/3/15) - Competing exactly a week since their most-recent match, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team swept through their two opponents on Saturday afternoon.

ETBU claimed a straight-set victory over fellow American Southwest Conference member and match host LeTourneau University to open the day, winning 25-16, 25-14, 25-18. In a subsequent neutral-site match also played at Solheim Arena, ETBU won yet again in three-consecutive sets over non-conference opponent Centenary College (La.), 25-9, 25-17, 25-15. With these victories, ETBU pushes to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in ASC competition.

Against LETU, ETBU finished with a team hitting percentage of .404. In comparison, LETU hit .135 as a team for the match.

Mallory Sanders led all players with 15 kills, and Reighanna Guzman totaled a match-best 20 assists. Rebecca Green had a match-high four total blocks, while Hannah Jones contributed a team-leading 14 digs. Dolores Kroese had a team-high 11 kills for LETU, while Nicole Mosley totaled 14 assists.

Later in the afternoon against Centenary, ETBU had an overall attacking percentage of .375, while Centenary hit at a .011 clip for the match. For ETBU, Adaeze Elonu contributed eight kills and five total blocks. Sanders had seven kills and 13 digs, while Kayla Green chipped in 10 assists. Jones had 17 digs to pace all players, and Guzman had 18 assists.

ETBU competes next on Tuesday when they host Texas-Tyler beginning at 7 p.m.

Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime, 3-2, at Texas-Tyler
SOCCER (M): TYLER, Texas (10/3/15) - Leading by a single goal deep into the 81st minute, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team ultimately dropped a 3-2 overtime decision at Texas-Tyler on Saturday night at Citizen?s 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. The defeat drops ETBU to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in American Southwest Conference competition. Texas-Tyler improves to 5-2-1 and 3-0 within ASC play.

In the 38th minute, Pablo Jaimes capitalized for the match's first goal. After having back-to-back shots deflected, Jaimes connected into the back of the net for a 1-0 ETBU edge. That lead held through the halftime buzzer, but Texas-Tyler tied the match, 1-1, in the 57th minute courtesy of a Ryan Brinda goal.

In the 69th minute, Brett Forbus used a service from teammate Jose Vega to push ETBU, 2-1. Less than 13 minutes later, Texas-Tyler again knotted the match up, 2-2, this time on a Jorge Alvarado goal which eventually forced an overtime period. With just a hair under two minutes to go in the opening overtime, Leandro Cid Fernandez scored the match-winning goal.

Juan Perales stopped 11 shots in goal for ETBU, while John McGuffin made five saves for Texas-Tyler.

ETBU plays next on Friday against Belhaven University (Miss.). The opening kick is slated for 3 p.m. at Cornish Field.

Soccer Stifled By Twelfth-Ranked Texas-Tyler, 5-0
SOCCER (W): TYLER, Texas (10/3/15) - Facing a top-15 opponent on the road, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer finished with five shots, including one on-goal, in a 5-0 defeat to No. 12 Texas-Tyler on Saturday evening at Citizen's 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. The loss dips ETBU to 2-7 overall and 2-2 within American Southwest Conference match play, while Texas-Tyler progresses to 9-0-1 and 4-0 in ASC competition.

Texas-Tyler struck first in the ninth minute as Nikki Gordon used her right foot to find the back left of the net to move the match to a 1-0 score. Later on in the 31st minute, ETBU goalkeeper Christina Salas moved forward within the penalty box to approach a service, and Vanessa Rangel then chipped in a bouncing shot that reached the center of the goal to increase Texas-Tyler's edge to 2-0.

Stephanie Castillo had what proved to be ETBU's lone shot on-goal of the match during the 44th minute, but Texas-Tyler goalkeeper Hannah Fischer made a save. The second half featured three more Texas-Tyler goals to account for the 5-0 final score.

ETBU hosts Belhaven University (Miss.) in non-conference action on Friday at Cornish Field starting at 1 p.m.
