ETBU School of Education Recognizes Outstanding Students

MARSHALL, Texas (4/23/15) - The East Texas Baptist University School of Education handed out year-end student awards on Saturday, April 18, 2015, for the 2014-2015 academic year. The awards reception was held in the Woods Great Room of the Ornelas Student Center.  Student projects were displayed in the Cornish Great Room.

The Department of Kinesiology presented their awards first before a large crowd of students, faculty, family, and friends.

The Dr. Marie Franks Scholarship was awarded to April Fry of Winnsboro.

The Kinesiology Leadership Award was presented to Casey Sergent of Marshall and Morgan Garrett of Coushatta, La.

The Joe and Marilyn Hogue Scholarship was presented to Dana Boyd of Kilgore and Brady Tomlin of Gilmer. 

Sarah Clements of Pearland was named the Department of Kinesiology Outstanding Student. 

The Kinesiology Department presented Rising Star Awards to seven students. The ones recognized were Kate Bramlett of Granbury, Kailey Cavanaugh of Temple, Kathryn Hill of Wichita Falls, Kaitlyn Hollingshead of New Braunfels, Anthony Stine of Texarkana, Jacob Wadle of Tyler and Josh Young of Marshall.

The Department of Teacher Education gave out nine awards to deserving students.

The Outstanding Student Award went to Hannah Gray of Orange.   

MaKenzie Hunt of Winnie won the Delores Neally Spruell Award. The award is given to the senior elementary education major most likely to succeed as an elementary teacher.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Award, presented to an outstanding senior who plans to enter the teaching profession, went to Kelly Jo McLendon of Livingston.  

Harvey Wiggins of Lancaster was awarded the Pre-Service Educator of the Year award. 

The Highest Elementary Education GPA award went to Breanna Ainsworth of Atlanta with Whitney Justice of Tyler receiving the award for the Highest Secondary/All-Level Education GPA.   

This year the Mary Lu Wiley Award was given to Rachel Sirman of Keithville, La. The award is presented to an outstanding elementary education student who has demonstrated high academic scholarship in all areas and specifically in the field of reading/language arts, and who exhibits qualities of personal and professional leadership, as well as dedication to the reading profession. 

The Sara Jane Youree Award is presented each year to an outstanding male teacher student. This year?s honor went to Kyle Carroll of Palestine.

The Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award went to Candice Hamilton of McKinney. 

Dr. PJ Winters, Director of the Masters of Education program recognized the graduates of the program in its fourth year. The 30 semester hour program can be competed in 12 months and is designed to develop education leaders with a Christian framework. 

Graduates of the ETBU School of Education will receive their degrees on May 2 during the 1:30 p.m. session of  Spring Commencement held in Baker Auditorium of the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center.
