Dr. Michael Ramon Hicks is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, and is a graduate of Captain Shreve High School. Michael earned his Bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and he holds a Master’s degree in Guidance & Counseling from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. He earned his Doctorate degree in Education Leadership from Louisiana Tech University in 2014. His research and expertise center on issues of leadership, justice and equity.

Michael’s career as an educator began as a substitute teacher in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. In 2007, after serving as a community mental health specialist, Michael transitioned to school counseling and in 2011, he was selected “Middle School Counselor of the Year” by his counselor peers in the Caddo Parish School System. Michael’s higher education experience includes serving one year as an Assistant Professor of Education at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas where he also served as the Coordinator for Male Student Initiatives and as the Director of Teacher Assessment and Certification. From Fall 2014 until the spring of 2018, he served in several academic and administrative roles at Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana, including Director of Community Partnerships and Interim Department Chair of Education. In the summer of 2018, Michael accepted a tenure-track faculty appointment at Centenary College of Louisiana. In September of 2018, he was awarded the Mattie Allen Broyles Eminent Scholars Endowed Chair. He is a 2017-2019 Board member of the Association of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He frequently provides professional development training to teachers and administrators of Caddo Parish, and to staff and supervisors within the City of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Dr. Hicks is a mentor, coach, and a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. He is the current Chairman of the fraternity’s Frank R. Rayson Good Citizenship Award Program, which each year recognizes and highlights the college aspirations of over 100 male high school students from Caddo and Bossier parishes.

He is married to Demessia Hicks, who is a chemist and is the Director of Solvents for Calumet Specialty Products, Inc. They are both members of Mount Canaan Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, where Dr. Hicks serves as a member of the Deacon’s Ministry and as the Superintendent of Sunday School.

He and Demessia are the parents of two children, Madisyn Nicole, and Michael Coleman.
