University Community Code of Conduct

University Community Code of Conduct

Being a member of the East Texas Baptist University community means making a commitment to creating and maintaining Christ-centered experience, environment, and culture conducive to the integration of faith and learning, servant leadership development, and academic excellence. ETBU emphasizes a biblical standard of moral character and personal conduct by all students, faculty, and staff. As a campus community, we commit to act in accordance with these standards and expectations, the University Community Code of Conduct, and other policies, rules, and regulations as described in the ETBU Academic Catalog and the ETBU Handbooks for Students, Faculty and Staff.

University Community Code of Conduct Covenant
As a member of the ETBU community, I accept the moral duty and social responsibility for managing my own actions and for creating a community where every member feels safe, respected, and valued.

I pledge to:

  • Display Christ-like character and servant leadership.
  • Uphold and advance ETBU’s Christ-centered mission.
  • Show love and respect for all people. Speak with wisdom and kindness when another’s actions fail to demonstrate respect or care for others.
  • Obey all federal, state, and local laws.
  • Abide by all ETBU standards, expectations, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Submit to spiritual authority and institutional leadership.
  • Conduct myself in a manner consistent with the principles of ethical and academic integrity.
  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in classes, learning activities, and vocational responsibilities.
  • Actively participate in Christian fellowship and serve the campus and local communities.
  • Represent ETBU’s Christ-centered mission on-campus and off-campus.

In light of the inherent risks during the novel coronavirus pandemic (now designated SARS-CoV2 which causes the disease COVID-19) of living, working, and studying as a part of the ETBU community alongside my commitment to show love and respect toward others, I also pledge to help keep fellow students, faculty, staff, and guests of the University as safe as possible by doing my part to help stop the spread of COVID-19. I acknowledge that by engaging in campus activities, including attending classes, working at ETBU, pursuing my education, living on campus, eating in the dining halls, attending events, and participating in sports and recreation, I may be exposed to COVID-19 and other infections. I also understand that despite all reasonable efforts by ETBU, I can still contract COVID-19 and other illnesses. In order to reduce my risk, I agree to be an active participant in maintaining my own health, well-being and safety, as well as the safety of others, by following all the guidelines and expectations outlined by the University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as national, state, and local health authorities.

As more information is gathered and known, I understand that ETBU and other governmental agencies may modify these guidelines and expectations. It is my responsibility to make every effort to keep myself apprised of these changes to help protect myself and the East Texas Baptist University community.

In order to protect myself, my peers, my colleagues, and the ETBU community, I pledge to do the following:

  • Wash my hands frequently with soap and water or using hand-sanitizer.
  • Maintain appropriate physical distancing of at least 6 feet, when possible.
  • Wear a face mask covering my nose and mouth when in ETBU buildings or near other individuals.
  • Keep clothing, belongings, personal spaces, and shared common spaces clean and sanitized.
  • Monitor for the symptoms of COVID-19 and report to a medical professional and the University, if I experience a fever of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, dry cough, congestion, runny nose, difficulty breathing, chills, fatigue, muscle pain/body aches, headache, sore throat, nausea, diarrhea, or loss of taste or smell.
  • Report to the University and quarantine at my home or in my campus residential room, if I feel ill or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Participate in contact tracing, testing, and isolation to preserve the wellness of the community.
  • Stay up-to-date on immunizations that combat vaccine-preventable diseases.

I recognize East Texas Baptist University cannot control these risks and may not be able to provide the necessary medical care that my situation may require. ETBU is focused on the health and well-being of all members of the University community and its guests. However, ETBU cannot guarantee a risk-free environment. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death.

I have read, understand, and accept the risks concerning COVID-19 and understand that my health and safety is my personal responsibility. By typing and signing below, I commit to uphold the East Texas Baptist University Community Code of Conduct Covenant and acknowledge the risk associated with COVID-19 pandemic and the preventative health measures required for studying and working at East Texas Baptist University.
