“Cultivating Personal Agency in African American College Females” by Dr. Tracey Burrell

BurrelDr. Tracey Burrell serves as Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Preparation and Partnerships at LSU Shreveport. She is a graduate of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, where she received a BA in Journalism. It was an experience in her junior year of college that led her to become a teacher. Three years later, she enrolled in Alabama State’s graduate program where she received a Master’s of Secondary Education with a concentration in English Language Arts.
Dr. Burrell has 22 years of teaching experience in secondary public school classrooms in Alabama and Louisiana. Recognized early in her career as a teacher leader, she served on numerous district, regional, and state curriculum design teams. After receiving a second Master’s degree, this one in Educational Leadership from LSU Shreveport, she was named Curriculum Coordinator for English Language Arts and Foreign Language, Grades 6-12 for the Bossier Parish School district. LSU Shreveport recognized Dr. Burrell with the Academic Award for graduate students and offered her an adjunct teaching position shortly after commencement. She enjoyed teaching at the collegiate level so much that she moved into a permanent staff position in August 2012. In 2014, Dr. Burrell enrolled in LSU Shreveport’s Doctorate of Leadership Studies program. Five years later, she graced the commencement stage as the only Spring 2019 doctoral graduate.
Dr. Burrell began the 2020-2021 academic year with a new title. Last March, she accepted a tenure-track faculty appointment in the College of Education and Human Development. As Director of Clinical Preparation and Partnerships, she supports pre-service teachers, arranges clinical experiences, and fosters relationships with school districts that hire LSU Shreveport graduates.
Dr. Burrell is married to her college sweetheart, Cassius Burrell, a State Farm agent in Shreveport. They celebrate a union of 23 years with two amazing children, Cassidy-20 and Aeron 14. Cassidy is a college junior at the University of Alabama and a proud member of the 400-student Million Dollar Marching Band. Aeron is a freshman at Parkway High School in Bossier City. He is a soccer prodigy who travels the world playing the sport that he loves. Dr. Burrell describes her family as special gifts from God that inspire her to grow. She recognizes that without Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, she can do nothing. She is a member of Celebration Church in Shreveport.
