Dr. Jerry Summers has taught at East Texas Baptist University since January of 1991, formerly served as Chairman of the Department of History and Political Science, and currently serves as Dean of the School of Humanities. Dr. Summers earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at Baylor University, a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas. Previous to completing his doctorate and coming to ETBU, Summers served as a pastor in Kentucky and a Baptist Student Union director in Texas. His publications include Sam B. Hall Jr.: Whatever is Right (2005), the biography of the congressman and federal judge who was a Marshall, Texas, native and graduate of the College of Marshall. Dr. Summers was appointed the Sam B. Hall Jr. Professor of History in 1993. He has written published articles on history, and on teaching, learning and Christian faith, and is a longtime member of the Conference on Faith and History. Dr. Summers loves to help students to recognize the ever-present reality of the past and to envision its power to prepare them for the future that God reveals to expectant and prepared people.
