Meet Dr. Derek J. Royer

“Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” Psalm 86:11 ESV

Dr. Royer is an Associate Professor of Biology and serves as the department chair. Prior to joining the ETBU faculty, he worked in biomedical research and held positions at the National Institutes of Health, Duke University School of Medicine, and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Royer obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry from Oklahoma Baptist University (2011) and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (2016). He has received numerous awards for his research and has published many articles in the fields of microbiology, immunology, and vision science.

Dr. Royer utilizes his front-line research experience to help cultivate students’ understanding of biological concepts and their ability to think scientifically. Importantly, he sees the biological sciences as a way to appreciate the intricacies of God’s Creation and the magnificence of the Imago Dei. He is passionate about helping students reach their professional aspirations while affirming that one’s true identity and purpose are found in Christ. Dr. Royer and his wife, Tamara, have two daughters, Evelyn and Faith.
