Salas Named ASC Defensive Player of the Week
A big factor in East Texas Baptist University’s 1-0-1 week last week in the American Southwest Conference, women’s soccer player Christina Salas was named the ASC Defensive Player of the Week. This is the first award for ETBU this fall in the ASC.
Salas collected 13 saves in two matches with a career high 10 saves in a 2-1 defeat of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Handing UMHB their second ASC loss, she had a strong second half to secure the win. She recorded two saves at the beginning of the second half when the score was still tied at one all. In the final six minutes she posted three saves in the 84th minute and then in the 88th and 89th minutes as ETBU finished up with the win.
She then had the same scenario vs. Concordia-Texas in the second half as ETBU took the tie, 0-0, in double overtime. In the second half, she recorded all three of her saves as the final save came in the 90th minute just before time expired. With the 0-0 tie, it was her third shutout of the year.
Overall, she faced 36 shots and had a .929 save percentage in 200 minutes played.
ETBU is now 4-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the ASC as they host Louisiana College and Mississippi College this week at Cornish Field in homecoming week.
