Working at Jarrett Library

Jarrett Library employs a large number of students, as well as full- and part-time faculty and staff.  The information below will give you information on obtaining employment at the Library.

 

STUDENT ASSISTANTS

Each regular semester Jarrett Library employs 20-25 students and 3-6 during the MDSC00103ay and June terms.  To qualify for employment you must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Must be approved for work-study in the Financial Aid Office.
  2. Must come to the Library and fill out an application for employment.
  3. Must interview with Mrs. Annie Henderson who will do the final hiring.

Although the term "work-study" is applied to these positions, that does not mean one is allowed to study while on duty in the library.  This is a regular job, and everyone employed by the library is expected to report to work on time and work diligently on his or her assignment during that time.

LIBRARY STAFF

The Library employs four full-time and one part-time staff member.  The staff falls into two categories, Library Assistant and LibraDSC00129ry Associate.

Library Assistants work in the Circulation and Technical Services areas.  Circulation duties include checking in and out materials, maintaining the bookstacks, shelving materials, etc.  Technical Services duties include maintaining the serials collection, ordering materials, processing materials, preservation, etc.  Education and experience needed vary according to the position.

Library Associates work mainly in Information Services and assist with reference.  Employees in these positions must have a minimum of an earned Bachelors degree in order to qualify.

All Library Staff positions are responsible for working at different times the library is open.  This includes Sunday-Thursday evenings for some positions and occasional Saturdays for all other staff.

LIBRARY FACULTY (LIBRARIANS)

The Library employs three full-time librarians who are also members of the University faculty.  Librarians oversee the other areas of the library and are responsible for a certain number of hours of refDSC00134erence each week.  One librarian is responsible for the planning and implementation of library instruction and reference services.  Another librarian is responsible for the cataloging and classification of all materials in the library as well as Interlibrary Loan and oversees the staff of Technical Services.  The third librarian is the Director of the Library which entails overseeing the entire library operation.  All librarians serve as liaison to two or three of the University Schools.

To qualify for a Librarian position one must possess an earned M.L.S. or its equivalent from an American Library Association accredited school of library science.  Faculty rank is dependent on other factors as determined by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.
