Student Code of Conduct
East Texas Baptist University expects students to:
• abide by University policies and regulations.
• obey all federal, state, and local laws.
• show respect for others.
• prepare for, attend, and participate in classes and learning activities.
• conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the principles of academic and ethical integrity.
• uphold the university’s mission, including civility, respect, and compassion.
• actively participate in their church and community.
• accept the inherent responsibility that as students of ETBU they represent more than just themselves.
ETBU requires students to follow the policies regarding individual behavior, and expects all members of the University community to uphold the Christian principles of love and genuine concern for the welfare of others. Students failing to follow the University policies and procedures will be subject to disciplinary sanctions. The purpose of disciplinary sanctions at ETBU is to encourage personal responsibility, character development, and adherence to all policies. Policy Reminder
A policy reminder is a verbal and/or written reminder by a resident staff member or a Student Affairs officer regarding a behavior that is contrary to the student code of conduct. The purpose of a policy reminder is to encourage a positive behavioral response from a student after he or she is reminded of a policy or procedure.
Community Service
There are three options for community service: campus work assignment, charitable donation, and Student Foundation Scholarship Fund donation. You may select the option that you prefer. The deadline for your community service is listed on your Community Service Form. Failure to complete your community service by the deadline will result in a “hold” being placed on your student account and additional disciplinary action will be taken.
Campus Work Assignment
You are required to work a certain number of hours on the ETBU campus or at a selected location. These assignments include cleaning, trash pick-up, assisting with university functions, etc. Contact the Office of Student Affairs for a list of pre-approved campus work assignments. You are required to submit your completed Campus Work Assignment Form to the Office of Student Affairs by the deadline on your Community Service Form. Campus Work Assignment Forms are available in the Office of Student Affairs.
Charitable Donation
You are required to donate a certain monetary amount to a pre-approved non-profit organization in East Texas. To make a donation, contact your preferred organization. You are required to submit a copy of your donation receipt to the Office of Student Affairs by the deadline on your Community Service Form.

Soda Lake Baptist Association: Ministry Center, Blue Roof Disaster Relief Unit, Women’s Center of East Texas, Pregnancy Resource Center, and Buckner Counseling Center
American Red Cross

Marshall Food Bank/Harrison County Food Bank
Meals on Wheels
Salvation Army
Student Foundation Scholarship Fund
You are required to donate a certain monetary amount to the East Texas Baptist University Student Foundation Scholarship Fund. To make a donation, go to the ETBU Business Office. You are required to submit a copy of your payment receipt to the Office of Student Affairs by the deadline on your Community Service Form.
Warning Probation
Warning Probation is the lesser form of probation indicating that the student has been notified verbally and in writing that he or she has engaged in unacceptable behavior. This warning also indicates that further violation of said regulation may result in more severe disciplinary action.
Disciplinary Probation
Disciplinary Probationis a more severe type of probation indicating that the student has engaged in unacceptable behavior and may be required to report to an administrative officer on a regular basis during the probationary period. Disciplinary probation may entail the loss of privileges, loss of financial aid, and exclusion from extracurricular activities, which includes athletics, intramural sports, music, drama groups, student government, and all other extracurricular activities. Written notice of disciplinary probation is maintained in the student’s file in the Student Affairs office. Violation of conditions stipulated in the written notice, or violation of other University policies, may result in further disciplinary actions, including suspension and dismissal.
Suspension
Suspension is the removal from student status with an option to apply for readmission after a specified period of time. Suspension requires the student to leave school immediately and not return for any activity of the University for the specified period. Written notice of suspension is maintained in the student’s file.
Suspension from Housing is a lesser type of suspension. This sanction allows a student to continue attending classes although he or she is not allowed to live in residential housing or attend University events (intramural sports, intercollegiate sports, clubs, organizations, etc.).
Dismissal
Dismissal is a permanent separation from the University. A student dismissed from the University may not visit or be present on campus without permission from Student Affairs. Written notice of dismissal is kept in the student’s file. Only under unusual circumstances will a dismissed student be readmitted to the University. A notice of dismissal may be appealed. If a student is reinstated after the appeals process, he or she will be given an opportunity to make up any assignments missed during the process. If a student is reinstated after an appeal, he or she will not be allowed to return to class until all faculty on the student’s schedule are notified of the reinstatement.
Disciplinary Appeal Process
A student may appeal any disciplinary sanction, short of suspension or dismissal, to the Vice President for Student Affairs. In these matters, the Vice President’s decision will be final. A student may appeal a suspension or dismissal to the Student Conduct Committee. A complete overview of the disciplinary appeal process is located in the ETBU Student Handbook.
