The first NCAA Region softball rankings of the 2014 season were released Thursday (April 18) with three American Southwest Conference universities listed among the top six teams in the West Region.
Conference leader, the University of Texas at Tyler, (33-2) leads the NCAA West Region Rankings while East Texas Baptist University (30-5) is second and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (24-12) ranks sixth.
All three teams will close the conference portion of their 2014 schedules next week (April 26). Texas-Tyler has won its last 13 games and has a three game lead with one week left to play in the regular season. The Patriots have won 30 or more games for eight-straight seasons, the longest streak in the conference. East Texas Baptist has also won its last 13-games, is currently second in the ASC standings and has recorded six consecutive shutouts. Mary Hardin-Baylor has won its last 11 games, including five run-rule victories, to cross the 20-win mark for the season.
The NCAA Region rankings posted by the softball national committee are used to determine the seeding in team selections for the NCAA Division III national tournament. The April 17 ranking is the first of three region rankings the NCAA will release this season. The next region ranking will be released April 24 and the final ranking will be posted May 1.
The regionals of the NCAA Division III Championship will be played May 9-11, with the Super Regionals scheduled to be played May 16-17. The Championship will be played May 22-27 and hosted by Texas-Tyler.
