ETBU Graphic Artist/Photographer Ryan Perry earned two statewide journalism top prizes at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Awards for Best Feature Series and Star Online Package. Before Perry joined ETBU in November 2012, he was the Features Editor for the Longview News-Journal.

Perry and News-Journal Media Editor Scott Brunner won the top online package award series “The Killer Inside Him,” and Perry won best feature series for written coverage of the story. The series was about the former Carthage funeral director, Bernie Tiede, who was convicted of killing his elderly companion and placing her in a Deepfreeze for nine months before he was caught and confessed to the crime. Perry and Brunner interviewed Tiede from prison, as well as the investigator, prosecutor and defense attorney in the high-profile case. Tiede’s story was turned into the feature film “Bernie” in 2012.

Judges’ comments on the top feature series award read “Bernie Tiede’s story is so incredible, it would be easy for a writer to resort to melodrama. But Ryan Perry sets the facts out so crisply, I found myself gasping as I read. He lets Bernie’s shocking story tell itself — and that’s the right way to do it!”
