Sigma Tau Delta

The English Department sponsors an active chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Through this organization, students have the opportunity to publish their creative work and critical essays in the Sigma Tau Delta journals, The Sigma Tau Delta Review and The Rectangle.

In addition, Sigma members host a number of annual events, including the annual Poe Party in October, featuring themes from Poe's famous short stories and poems. The members also plan and host a literary service project each spring. Recent events included an African-American Read-In held at the Jarrett Library on campus and a sidewalk poetry writing event.

For additional information, contact the faculty sponsor, Dr. David Splawn.

Era Miller Writing Contest

Sigma Tau Delta also sponsors the annual Era Miller Writing Contest for students, and their winning stories, poems, and essays are published in The Beacon.

This writing contest was named in honor of Era Miller, a former English professor at ETBU, and the contest began upon Professor Miller's retirement.

The Beacon

Students' winning stories, poems, and essays from the annual Era Miller Writing Contest are published in The Beacon,  ETBU's journal in the Humanities, which is housed in the English department. For information on The Beacon, contact Dr. Jeanna White.

Study Abroad

Students can earn degree credit through ETBU's travel study programs. Programs last from a few weeks to a semester or year and cover a variety of disciplines.

In 2013, students visited the Lake District in England for a study of Romanticism. Several English majors have participated in Scholars' Semester in Oxford, a program sponsored by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Plans are currently underway for another trip to England.

For more information, visit the program’s website or contact Dr. David Splawn.
