Lady Tiger Parker Named National Pitcher of the Week
East Texas Baptist University pitcher Shelby Parker has gained national recognition as she has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Pitcher of the week.
Parker, a senior right-hander from Brazoria, Texas, was personally 2-0 in a 3-0 week for the (10-0) Tigers. She fanned the first nine batters of the game en route to a career-high 15 strikeouts in a 4-1 complete-game victory over Howard Payne in the opener of a three-game American Southwest Conference series. In the final game of the series, she struck out the side in the second, third and fifth innings to total nine strikeouts — half of the batters she faced — over the first five innings of a 8-2 triumph.
Her teammate, junior outfielder Sara Clements, was highlighted on the NFCA website as one of the Top Performers in the nation. Clements batted .667 (6-of-9) with a .778 slugging percentage, four runs scored, a double and three RBI in a 3-0 conference week for the Tigers. She has a 12-game hitting streak dating back to the last two games of 2013.
The nationally ranked ETBU softball team heads into a weekend series with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Taylor Field on campus. The 10-0 Lady Tigers moved from number eight to number six in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Top 25 poll.
