The East Texas Baptist University debate team earned top awards at the International Public Debate Association National Championship Debate Tournament March 21-24. More than 200 competitors from 23 universities competed at the three-day event held on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Heather DeVille, ETBU senior from Tyler, won the National Championship Tournament Varsity Division Speaker Championship and Dr. Cole Franklin, coach of the ETBU team, won the Professional Division Speaker Championship. The titles mean that the competitors received more speaker points than any other competitor in their respective divisions over the course of eight preliminary rounds of debate at the tournament.

The National Championship Tournament was the final tournament of the academic year for the ETBU debate team. The squad will return to competition in September.
