Congratulations ETBU Alpha Chi Award Winners in History!
May 2010. Two of our students excelled in their research and writing and were recognized for it during the spring semester. Lynn A. Wartberg (2010 B.A. History graduate and new graduate student at University of New Orleans) won a prestigious award - the Benedict Fellowship - from Alpha Chi for a paper related to her honors project work. Jake Keeling (Junior BSE History major) won the Nolle Scholarship. Each was only one of ten national Alpha Chi awards. Let's give a deserved word of praise (anonymous here) for those faculty members in the department and School of Humanities who guided, encouraged, and facilitated these successes!
What's Coming Up?
December 7: the Political Awareness Society will screen the film Hotel Rwanda and sponsor a discussion among students and faculty afterward. Genocide is the topic.
In January, senior Lynn Wartberg will present a paper at the Phi Alpha Theta biennial conference in San Diego. Let's hope she will see blue skies instead of fog in Southern California!
In February, ETBU will host the Sam B. Hall Lecture at an evening banquet. The lecturer will be Dr. David Holcomb whose doctoral work and continuing scholarship has included church and state studies. His topic for the evening lecture will be recent decisions of the Roberts Supreme Court and their implications for religious liberty and church-state issues in general.
October 2009
Congratulations to Jennifer Hoover who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at Texas Tech! Dr. Hoover will receive her Ph.D. hood on December 19. Spouse Dr. David S. "Sandy" Hoover is a department faculty member.

Students in Phi Alpha Theta and Alpha Chi -- the Pi Mu Chapter of the international history honor society Phi Alpha Theta inducted five new members earlier in the semester. They will be recognized at the School of Humanities honors day ceremonies on April 21. They are Cameron Sipes, Traci Hudson, Elizabeth Kienzle Moffett, Jane Hays, and Lynn Wartberg. Joscelyn Strother is the Phi Alpha Theta-Pi Mu president.
CONGRATULATIONS to Junior Lynn A. Wartberg who presented a prize-winning paper at the Alpha Chi National Convention in Indianapolis on April 4. Her paper, "Longhorn Army Ammunition Depot, Harrison County, Texas, and the Russians" won first place in the United States History division. Lynn's original research was related to the Longhorn Army Ammunition Depot, the anti-ballistic missile program during the Cold War, and the ABM treaties that required missiles to be decommissioned and Russian observers to be present for some time in Marshall and Harrison County. This is a significant, nationally recognized achievement, and we are proud to have Lynn with us at ETBU and in the department!
January 2009
The ETBU trustees approved the new political science major for its formal start with the 2009-2010 academic year. Our department is excited to welcome new students interested in the major and some programs being developed to put their academic learning into practice beyond campus. May 2008
Students accompanied Dr. Summers, Dr. Jane Ogden, and Debra Wainscott of the International Education office on a nineteen day trip to China. The group visited Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Xi'an. The travel study trip was a cultural exchange and class trip, involving the course HUMA 3370 China Travel Study. Students earned academic credit in history, political science, or a general elective in the humanities. Dr. Jane Ogden, Professor of Psychology, used the trip as and introduction to China and preparation for a travel study class she will lead in May 2009.
August 2008
Congratulations to Dr. David Sanders "Sandy" Hoover who just completed his Ph.D. with Texas Tech University. This is a significant accomplishment for him and a great benefit to our university and students!
November / December 2007
Congratulations to the newest members of our Pi Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international honor society in history. They are Kristi Hook, Nina Baker, and Grace Curry. Antay Pond is Phi Alpha Theta president.
Thank you Phi Alpha Theta for providing the "Thank You Faculty" lunch in the faculty lounge on December 3rd.
August 2007
As the new academic year begins the department is offering new courses (4102 Professional Review, 4320 Senior Thesis, and 3311 History of Latin America) and starting to work with students interested in the International Studies major and University Studies major. The University Studies major allows some interesting concentrations in pre-law and political science.
Classes start on Monday, August 27.

May 2007
ETBU students in literature, history, and political science have declared the travel-study trip to the United Kingdom (just England, May 11-23) a "smooth" trip and an "11" on a scale of 1-10. Even if it was not an "11" for everyone, it was close. Our group members packed their days with numerous experiences in travel, museum and historical site visits, personal interactions, and classic British weather -- cool and wet. The highlights were varied, but everyone found something to enjoy and study in London, or York, or Cambridge, or Dover. The courses were "British Modernism" with Mrs. Cassandra Falke, and "British Studies" with Dr. Jerry Summers. Our group of 15 students will have more to report on this website, in the campus newspaper, and in other venues during the next year.
Our department and the School of Humanities will continue to offer travel-study opportunities to Mexico, the UK/Europe, and China, in the next few years. Planning for summer 2008 is underway for language study in Mexico and travel-study to China during June.

Congratulations to Lauren Schaubhut on being chosen as an intern with the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia.
And congratulations to our departmental awardees for the School of Humanities Honors Ceremony: Lynn Wartberg received the Scholarship in Writing Award and Hopkins Scholarship for Outstanding Freshman in History, and Charlotte Dunlap was recognized as the Outstanding Student in Political Science.
February 2007 News
We are saddened by news of the death February 10th of Mr. Seth Walton who taught history at ETBC/ETBU from 1954 until his retirement in 1988. In retirement he and Mrs. Walton were benefactors to ETBU and provided merit scholarships for students in history. Mr. Walton served in the United States Army in World War II, fought in Europe, was wounded in action, and was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. The funeral service was held on Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2:00, at the Marshall First Baptist Church.
The School of Humanities and Department of History and Political Science announced a new, interdisciplinary, International Studies major and minor program for the Bachelor of Arts. The Department of History and Political Science will host the program, but the program will provide creative opportunities for students in many disciplines to gain International academic credit and cultural experience.
January 2007 News
David Lopez '06 will enter basic training with the U. S. Air Force in April and hopes to be assigned to the historians program.
Dr. Israel Nandamudi attended the 78th Southern Political Science Association meeting in New Orleans, January 4-7. He was Chairman of a Thursday session on International Politics and a discussant on "Institutions and Regime Change" in the Saturday session on the Comparative Politics of Developing Nations.
During the first quarter of 2007 the department will be compiling information, writing, and editing for the triennial departmental review. The review relates to our program, accomplishments, plans, and dreams. We hope for good revision and results from the study and review process.
December 2006 News
December--what a month! As the semester drew to a close, members of Phi Alpha Theta enjoyed a semester's end dinner at OS2 in downtown Marshall. Antay Pond is president.
Between Commencement and Christmas, Dr. Jerry Hopkins attended the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools December meeting in Orlando with ETBU President Riley and Provost/VP Sorrels. The trip and conference participation was vitally related to his service over the next 18 months or more as chairman of the Compliance Certification Committee for our university's accreditation study and review. Pray for his strength and wisdom as he heads this committee!
Also in December, two graduating students (B.A.) took the Major Field Test in history as part of our evaluation processes. This exam is a requirement for all B.A. graduates.
Recent graduate Lauren Schaubhut has been accepted to a graduate program in public history at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She will defer beginning her program for one year. Congratulations, Lauren!
November 2006 News
The Model United Nations class completed another successful conference with the American MUN in Chicago in the days before Thanksgiving. Congratulations to the students, and thanks to Dr. Israel Nandamudi and Mrs. Jennifer Hoover for their hard work and skillful guidance. MUN begins as a regular catalog course in the 2007-2008 year. Dr. Nandamudi and MUN hope their next conference will be in New York City, with sessions in the United Nations.
We note, sadly, the death of Mr. Willie Charles Hudson, the husband of our own Dr. Linda Hudson who retired this past May. Please remember Dr. Hudson during this time.
October 2006 News
On September 21 Senior students Allison Ratcliff and Ben Bryan presented papers, respectively, on the late-Roman Christian and philosopher Boethius, and on the medieval English mystic, Richard Rolle, at the Conference on Faith and History undergraduate research conference. The conference at OklahomaBaptistUniversityhosted students, professors, teachers, and other historians interested in the relationships between faith and history. Dr. Jerry Hopkins and Dr. Jerry Summers also participated and chaired sessions. Dr. Summers presented a paper as well. The CFH meets every two years on a different campus in the U.S. Forty-five students and over ninety other historians from all over the country made presentations. OklahomaBaptistUniversityis in Shawnee.
FORMER STUDENTS
Angela Henderson ('06) begins a master's program in Public History in spring 2007 at StephenF.AustinStateUniversity, Nacogdoches.
Pam Cavin ('00) - Pam is teaching 160 freshmen this fall in the Mesquite Schools, where she has taught for several years. She will commence a graduate program in spring 2007.
Benjamin Stewart ('01) - After graduating from the Columbia University School of Law and working two years with a Dallas law firm, Ben is a judicial law clerk with the Hon. Judge A. Joe Fish, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas, in Dallas. Recently Ben also married Erin who is also an attorney.
Lauren Schaubhut ('06) - Lauren's paper "World War II Sacrifices on the Homefront in Houston County, Texas," has been accepted for publication in the East Texas Historical Journal. Currently Lauren is making application to graduate school.
Stephanie Sledge ('06) is in Oregondoing semester missions.
Mark Jackson ('04) - Mark is currently pursuing a Masters of Public Administration at the Universityof North Texasand interning for the Dallas County Budget Office. After graduation in May 2007 he will probably find a government job in the DFW area.
Scott Bush ('97) -- Scott is the Social Studies Coordinator for Mesquite ISD, Texas. Mesquiteis a large and growing district with over forty schools and 35,000 students. Previously, Scott taught Pre-AP World History at NorthMesquiteHigh Schoolfor eight years.
Donnie Seals ('99) -- Don teaches history at PanolaCollegein Carthage, Texas. He is finishing his Ph.D. at the Universityof Mississippiat Oxford; his dissertation is on African-Americans and the Social Gospel. Update: Donnie now is teaching and doing administration at Kilgore College.
A NEW DEAN AND FACULTY MEMBERS -- Dr. Jerry Summers began June 1 as the new dean of the Schoolof Humanities. He succeeded Dr. Samuel Arguez who retired at the end of May after 19 years at ETBU. Dr. Summers also assumed the chairmanship of the History, Political Science and Geography Department. Our new instructor is Mr. David S. "Sandy" Hoover. Sandy will complete his Ph.D. from TexasTech University sometime in 2007. His wife, Jennifer Hoover, teaches as an adjunct instructor. She will also complete her dissertation and Ph.D. from Tech in 2007. We are proud to have Sandy and Jenny in our department
