It is the middle of the summer, but it is time to start thinking about Tiger Marching Band! Many of you have made contact with me, and I have enjoyed getting to know most of you through meetings in person, email and Facebook. Below are some details that might be helpful as you pack and get ready for move-in and rehearsals. You will receive updated email with more details in a couple of weeks, and then again the week before camp.
Band Camp- Camp this year is on a shortened schedule due to our not having an ETBU home game until Saturday, September 28. Because of this, the sports teams and trainers are all coming in later than most years and the dorms and cafeteria will not yet be up and running.
Moving In- On your move-in day Monday Aug. 12th 10am-noon for band leadership (Tau Beta Sigma, Kappa Kappa Psi, drum major, drumline and section leaders) and Wednesday August 14, times TBA for all other enrolled band students, including those attending the new “Tiger Camp” you may go directly to your dorms and unload your stuff. You will need to go by Student Services to pick up your temporary meal card (and permanent ID card.) Make sure you are “clear” with the Business Office!
Meals- ETBU will provide your meals until school starts. Your temporary card will be swiped for meals until Friday morning, August 16, at which time the temporary cards will be invalid, and you will start using your permanent ID card.
Instruments- ETBU provides all percussion equipment, large brasses and woodwinds, and other “small” instruments as needed. You may check out an instrument for the semester on Wednesday afternoon before our first meeting. You should plan to bring your own reeds, oil, grease and any other supplies you may need. Mouthpieces are generally supplied with school-owned instruments.
Music- You will be issued a folder of music at our organizational meeting Wednesday evening. We will supply a flip folder. If you wish to have a lyre for your instrument, you will need to purchase one at the local music store.
Uniforms- You will fit for uniforms on Wednesday afternoon after you have checked into the dorms. The uniform will be issued to you clean and in good condition. If alterations are required, the University will pay for them. I will provide you with an ETBU Band shirt to wear under your uniform and a ball cap to wear in the stands at games. To ensure a uniform look, we only allow the “company” shirt and hat to be worn at games. You will provide a pair of soccer or wind shorts to wear under your band pants.
Shoes- The Tiger Band uses a matte (non-shiny) black marching shoe. If you have shoes from a previous year, they may be used. If you have a marching shoe of that type from high school, you may use it. Otherwise you will need to purchase a pair before you get here. Our first uniformed performance is Saturday, September 28, so just order them before school starts. There are several good websites you can order from, including www.bandshoppe.com and www.Mccormicksnet.com. Any matte black shoe will be fine. The more expensive shoes are, of course, more comfortable and tend to last longer.
Rehearsals- Even though our camp schedule is shortened, we will still be working both inside and outside. We will work as a full band and in sectionals with student and staff leaders. T-shirts, shorts and athletic shoes (NO FLIP-FLOPS!!!!!) are the order of the day for marching rehearsals. Please be modest in your dress outside. I would like you to wear a hat and sunglasses when we are rehearsing outside. You might bring a sweater if you tend to get cold in the Band Hall.
Schedule- A great quote I heard last summer… “Blessed are the flexible, for they will not get bent out of shape!” We will adhere to the printed schedule as closely as possible, but be prepared to make adjustments. Some of our Freshmen will be attending the new “Tiger Camp” activity beginning Sunday, August 11. All Freshmen and transfers will attend Welcome Week activities beginning Thursday afternoon. There will be opportunities for Freshmen to join us in rehearsal on Friday and Saturday. After the Welcome Week schedule is finalized by Student Affairs, you will receive a detailed rehearsal schedule.
I’m sure you will still have questions after this note, and you are welcome to email or call right up until you get here. Look for updates over the next few weeks!
