ETBU Wins Spirit Award at the 2013 Corporate Spelling Beeby Mike Midkiff
MARSHALL, Texas (9/13/13) - East Texas Baptist University won this year’s Spirit Award at the 2013 Corporate Spelling Bee sponsored by the Marshall-Harrison County Literacy Council. The ETBU cheering section for this year’s ETBU team was loud and proud for Elizabeth Ponder, Manager of Instruction and Information Services for the Mamye Jarrett Library, Dr. Emily Prevost, Director of Leadership Development, and Dr. Mary Thompson-Price, Associate Professor of Teacher Education.
The cheering section consisted of 16 supporters and Tiger mascot, "Toby” showing their support each time the ETBU Spelling Bee Team spelled a word. Unfortunately, the defending champions went out in the round that saw seven other teams exit. The ETBU Spelling Bee team went out on the word, narcissistic.
The fundraising competition and lunch benefits the Marshall-Harrison County Literacy Council. ETBU alum Brad Howlett was the master of ceremonies for the event. The winning team of Brenda Bolton, Anna Lane, and Laurie Thompson, from the City of Marshall won by spelling, "euthanasia.”
Other teams in the competition were Bancorp South, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Good Shepherd Medical Center, Heart’s Way Hospice, KMHT, Marshall Independent School District, Marshall Lions Club, Marshall News Messenger, Republic Industries, Rotary Club of Marshall, Texas State Technical College, Waskom Independent School District and Wiley College.
