SOCCER (M): MARSHALL, Texas (8/31/13) – Not being able to keep up with Wiley College’s offensive fire power in the second half, East Texas Baptist University dropped their 2013 home opener, 4-1. Peter Fitzsimmons had ETBU’s lone goal in the second half. ETBU is now 1-1 on the year.
With a new line up in the first half with eight of the 11 players receiving their first career starts, the defense held off Wiley College until the 18th minute. Victor Colion broke the goose egg on the score board with the match’s first goal just slipping it past Bryant Botello.
ETBU did have the first look at the goal in the eighth minute with two header shots from Matthew Argenbright and David Jackson but Wiley’s Cesar Ponce grabbed both of them. Botello had two saves in the 10th and 14th minutes before Wiley struck the net in the 18th minute.
Botello had five saves after the first goal but did not receive any offensive help as ETBU had no more shots after the eighth minute. ETBU was in reach heading into the half only down 1-0.
It was a different story in the second half as Wiley’s offense came alive and challenged ETBU’s new goalie Axel Anderson. Just eight minutes into the second half, Wiley netted back-to-back goals in the 54th and 58th minute to take control, 3-0. Fitzgerald tried to slow down the Wiley attack with his first goal of the year in the 59th minute hitting a shot into the top right corner of the net. His shot was the last shot for ETBU in the second half until Bryan Romero took one in the 87th minute.
Wiley made it a three-goal advantage in the 73rd minute with their fourth goal of the match.
Wiley out shot ETBU, 17-7, taking 12 shots in the first half. ETBU took four second half shots and had six shots on goal total. ETBU posted seven corner kicks to Wiley’s two. Botello finished with eight saves for ETBU while Ponce had five for Wiley.
ETBU will play an exhibition on Friday, September 6th, in Jacksonville, Texas, vs. Jacksonville College and then travel to Mississippi on September 13th for a match vs. Millsaps College.
Esparza, Vazquez Score ETBU's First Goals of the Year
SOCCER (M): SHREVEPORT, La. (8/30/13) – Playing 89 minutes of shutout collegiate soccer, East Texas Baptist University earned a 2-1 win over Centenary College to open up the 2013 season. Centenary scored their only goal in the 90th minute with 45 seconds left in the game.
It was in the ninth minute that Jose Esparza collected his first goal of the year to put ETBU up 10-0. ETBU held onto their 1-0 lead until the 74th minute when Gustavo Vasquez made it 2-0 with a goal off of penalty kick save/deflection. He acted quickly and fired back the ball into the right side of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Cody Hopson’s goal of a shutout came to an end in the 90th minute when Centenary just slipped on by him as she made it 2-1. ETBU took 17 shots with eight in the first half and nine in the second half with seven on goal. Hopson did finish with three saves.
ETBU will host Wiley College at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, in the home opener.
ETBU Comes Up Short vs. Belhaven
SOCCER (W): Marshall, Texas (8/31/13) -Two first half Belhaven College goals set the East Texas Baptist University women’s soccer team back early in their home opener as they fell, 3-0. ETBU is now 1-1 on the year.
Belhaven opened quickly with a header by Saje Pernie in the fifth minute that was saved by starting goalkeeper Christina Salas. In the seventh minute, Erin Miller, who scored a goal in the win on Friday, took a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Isabelle Granlund.
In the 38th minute, Ashley Harber got a header to go past Salas, off a corner kick and an assist by Pernie, and that put Belhaven ahead, 1-0. Kia Jelley took a shot on goal just before halftime, but Granlund came up with another save, and Belhaven led by the 1-0 score at the half.
At the open of the second half, ETBU coach Paul Grant made a substitution at keeper, putting Sarah Collazo in for Salas. Two minutes into the second half, Harber put her second goal into the back of the net off a free kick and an assist by Chelsea Smith to make the score 2-0.
Kelsey Biscoe took two shots in the game, and her shot on goal came in the 63rd minute, but it was another shot that was turned away by Granlund, who finished with five saves on the night. After three more shots by Belhaven over the next 10 minutes, Jelley attempted a header that was knocked away by Granlund in the 77th minute.
Belhaven added their third goal of the contest on a ball that was misplayed by the defense, trying to clear, and Jordan Organ broke free and stuck it past Collazo for the final 3-0 deficit. Natalie Torres would make one final attempt on goal in the 90th minute, but Granlund made her final save, and the Tigers went down to defeat.
Jelley finished with two shots, both on goal, while Biscoe also had two shots, but only one of hers was on goal. Natalie Torres, Erin Miller, and Paola Bear all had one shot attempt, with Torres and Miller’s both being on goal. Nicole Salom had three shot attempts, but none were on target.
Collazo finished the match with two saves, while Salas added one. ETBU held the advantage in corner kicks, 3-2, and both teams took 10 shots. ETBU finished with five shots on goal, and Belhaven had six.
ETBU will look to bounce back in their next contest, which is Friday, September 13th, against Berry College in Clinton, Miss.
ETBU Holds On to Season Opening Victory, 2-1
SOCCER (W): SHREVEPORT, La. (8/30/13) – With only 13 minutes left in the match and the score deadlocked at one all, Paola Bear gave East Texas Baptist University the game winning goal to take the season opener, 2-1. Bear took a shot to the back of the goal from a beautiful pass from Kelsey Biscoe for the winning goal.
ETBU was on the board early as Erin Miller scored her first collegiate goal and first goal of the year in the seventh minute. Centenary did not take long to strike back tying the game up at one in the 20th minute when Madison Alexander slipped one by then goalie Sara Collazo. The next 25 minutes ETBU had three corner kicks and took four shots to try and take the lead. Bear had two of the four shots as both were saved by Centenary’s Erica Coker.
In the second half, ETBU took four shots with three on goal in the first 30 minutes. Bear finally broke through for the game winning goal in the 77th minute as ETBU moved ahead, 2-1. Centenary took no shots after that point.
ETBU took 18 total shots in the match with 12 in the first half and six in the second half putting 13 shots on goal. Centenary only took four shots with two on goal. Sarah Collazo started the match and Christina Salas finished the second half for the win recording both saves.
ETBU will host Belhaven College at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday in the home season opener.
ETBU has Tough Second Day at UMHB Invite
VOLLEYBALL: BELTON, Texas (8/31/13) – Facing a tougher schedule on day two of the Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational, East Texas Baptist University fell in both matches. In the first match of the day, Wayland Baptist took the win, 3-1, and then ETBU fell to Trinity (Texas), 3-0. ETBU is now 1-3 on the year.
Wayland Baptist 3, ETBU 1
After splitting the first two sets, Wayland Baptist won the final two for the match win. WBU took set one, 25-16, but ETBU bounced back for the set two win, 25-21. WBU then took set three, 25-18, and the final set, 25-15.
Melanie Moyer led the team with 11 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Kassie Freitag added eight kills while Kayla Taylor had 20 assists. Nicole Buzzard added 12 assists and Adaeze Elonu had five kills and three blocks.
Trinity 3, ETBU 0
After a tough set one in which ETBU fell, 26-24, Trinity won the next two sets, 25-19, and 25-20 for the 3-0 win. Moyer finished with 10 kills and 16 digs leading ETBU in the second straight match of the day with a double-double. Freitag led the team in kills with 15 and a .520 hitting percentage. Hannah Jones added 21 digs as Taylor posted 24 assists and Buzzard finished with 11 assists.
ETBU next plays in the UT-Tyler Tournament on Friday, September 6th, against Belhaven College and Jarvis Christian.
ETBU Gains First Win of 2013 in 2nd Match of Day
VOLLEYBALL: BELTON, Texas (8/30/13) – In the opening day of play for the 2013 season, East Texas Baptist University went 1-1 at the Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational. ETBU fell in their first match, 3-2, to Southwestern but bounced back with a 3-0 win over Huston-Tillotson. ETBU will have two more matches on Saturday vs. Wayland Baptist and Trinity University.
Southwestern 3, ETBU 2
In their opening match ETBU fell to Southwestern, 3-2, 23-25, 15-25, 27-25, 25-19, 11-15. ETBU was down 2-0 but fought back to tie the match at two sets a piece before falling in the final set, 15-11. Kassie Freitag led the team with a double-double picking up 15 kills and 10 digs. Kolby Sharp finished with nine kills and five total blocks while Hannah Jones had 28 digs. Nicole Buzzard had 19 assists while Kayla Taylor added 18 assists.
ETBU 3, Huston-Tillotson 0
Picking up their first victory of 2013 with a shutout, ETBU took three straight sets from Huston-Tillotson, 25-11, 25-11, 25-13. Melanie Moyer finished with 16 kills while Freitag added 11 kills. Kayla Taylor posted 21 assists while Hannah Jones had 15 digs. Adaeze Elonu posted four block assists, also.
ETBU will play Wayland Baptist and Trinity University on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Price Lands in Top 10 in First XC Meet of 2013
CROSS COUNTRY (M): TYLER, Texas (8/30/13) – Opening up the 2013 season with a tri-meet at the University of Texas-Tyler, the East Texas Baptist University men’s cross country team excelled in the two-mile run. Landon Price, who was ETBU’s top runner, finished sixth over. ETBU also ran against LeTourneau in the meet.
Price ran a 10:11 in the two mile run for a personal best. Following him was newcomers Aaron Durham with a time of 11:20 and then Jack Perkins with an 11:21 time. Seth Powers finished with an 11:44 time and Nicolas Larzabal had a time of 11:48. Jordan Tarbutton finished with a time of 16:14.
ETBU will be back in Tyler, Texas, on Friday, September 6th, for the UT-Tyler Invitational at 6:30 p.m.
Taylor Finishes in Top 10 for WXC at Opening Meet
CROSS COUNTRY (W): TYLER, Texas (8/30/13) – Facing American Southwest Conference opponents in a tri-meet on Friday, East Texas Baptist University raced against UT-Tyler and LeTourneau in the season opening meet. ETBU posted improved times over 2012 in the two-mile run.
Newcomer Shelby Taylor finished in the top 10 with a time of 13:53. Following her was Megan Merrill with a time of 14:01 while Shelby Sparks broke a time of 14:16. Mariah Pruitt ran a 15:14 while Madison Kauffman had a time of 16:20 and Leslie Martinez finished at 17:17. Sarah Gent, in her first collegiate race, had a 17:50 while Tori Turner posted a 22:58.
ETBU will be back in Tyler, Texas, on Friday, September 6th, for the UT-Tyler Invitational at 6:30 p.m.
