Soccer Announces 2013 Scheduleby Adam Ledyard
SOCCER (W): MARSHALL, Texas (7/25/13) – Hosting six home matches in 2013, the East Texas Baptist University women’s soccer team opens up their season on August 30th. ETBU will have four of their 10 American Southwest Conference matches at home while taking to the road nine times.
"The women will play a familiar preseason schedule with Centenary, Belhaven, and Hendrix College,” says head coach Paul Grant. "We have added Berry College and Sewanee University to our preseason schedule which will give us someone who we have not played before. This will make a much tougher preseason than any other I have had at ETBU.”
Grant, in his seventh year at ETBU as the women’s coach, led ETBU to the ASC Tournament last year and finished with an 8-7-1 record.
ETBU will have only six home matches starting on Saturday, August 31st, vs. Belhaven College at 5:00 p.m. Their next home match will not be for three weeks until Saturday, September 21st, against Hendrix College at 7:00 p.m. It will be another 19 days for their third home match which will begin a four-game home stand in the ASC vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor, Concordia-Texas, Louisiana College, and Mississippi College.
There will be four weekends of travelling for ETBU with three weekends on Thursday and Saturday in ASC play. The first weekend matches will be in Clinton, Miss., as ETBU faces Berry College and Sewanee at Mississippi College on September 13-14. The first ASC weekend will be September 26 and 28 in East Texas facing LeTourneau University and Texas-Tyler. October 3 and 5 will be the second weekend of ASC play with a trip to Arkansas to face the University of the Ozarks and then ends on Saturday at Texas-Dallas. The final road trip will be to West Texas with matches vs. Howard Payne on October 24 and Hardin-Simmons on October 26.
ETBU will have one home exhibition match on Friday, September 6, vs. Jacksonville College at 5:00 p.m.
ETBU will be looking to qualify for the ASC Tournament for the fourth time in five years and returns five starters from 2012 in Kia Jelly, Paola Bear, Christina Robles, Kelsey Biscoe, and Sasha Kotowych.
Men's Soccer to Host Six Home Matches in 2013
SOCCER (M): MARSHALL, Texas (7/24/13) – Under new leadership in Paul Grant, the East Texas Baptist University men’s soccer team will have 14 matches in 2013 as they push for an American Southwest Conference post season appearance. Grant took over the men’s program in late December and enters his first year overlooking both the men’s and women’s soccer programs.
ETBU has six home matches this year and will be on the road for eight matches. They open up the 2013 season on the road against Centenary College on Friday, August 30, and then have their first home match on Saturday, August 31, against Wiley College at 7:00 p.m.
"Our preseason schedule this year is a chance to start to develop a winning culture in the men’s program,” says head coach Paul Grant. "We will play across the state line rivalry Centenary College and two states over Millsaps College in our first two weeks of play. We will also start a cross town contest with Wiley College which will be a good test for us and a start of something that has not been done in the past. This preseason should prepare us for a new and interesting season of conference play as teams like Texas-Tyler, Mississippi College were regionally ranked this past season. This will be a tough conference season as any.”
After opening weekend, ETBU will not play until September 13 in Clinton, Miss., against Millsaps College. They will then host Concordia-Texas in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 21, at 4:00 p.m. and round out September on the road in East Texas with the American Southwest Conference openers vs. LeTourneau University in Longview on September 26 (8:00 p.m.) and Texas-Tyler on Saturday, September 28, at 8:00 p.m.
There will be eight matches in October with four home and four on the road. The month opens up on the road in Arkansas at the University of the Ozarks on October 3 followed by a Saturday match on October 5 in Richardson, Texas, against Texas-Dallas at 7:00 p.m. A four-game home stand starts on Thursday, October 10 and will run through October 19 with ASC matches vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor, Concordia-Texas, Louisiana College, and Mississippi College. October ends on the road in West Texas against Howard Payne on Thursday, October 24, and vs. Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, October 26.
ETBU will also have one exhibition match on Friday, September 6, vs. Jacksonville College.
ETBU returns All-ASC first-team selections in Peter Fitzsimmons and Juan Ramirez who were the top two goal scorers on the team in 2012.
