ETBU Sweeps MC; Swaner Has Game Winning Hit in Game 1by Adam Ledyard
SOFTBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (4/2/13) – Lya Swaner’s walk-off single and a strong pitching performance by Kelly Jo McLendon gave #8 East Texas Baptist University a series sweep over Mississippi College, 4-3, and 4-1. With the win, ETBU is now 22-6 and 10-2 in the American Southwest Conference East Division.
Swaner singled to centerfield as Maranda Westbrook came as the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one for the 4-3 win. In game two, McLendon pitched the entire game for her third win of the year with six strikeouts.

Lya Swaner singled in the winning run as ETBU took the first game, 4-3. Shelby Phillips came in relief and pitched the final 3.2 innings for the win with three strikeouts. Shelby Parker started the game and went 3.1 innings with five strikeouts before being relieved. She gave up three earned runs on five hits.
Alyssa Romero went 2-of-3 with one RBI while Lacy Liles and Sara Clements each had a home run. Swaner also had a RBI with the game winning hit.
ETBU went up 1-0 in the third inning on a Romero sacrifice fly. Mississippi College responded with three runs in the fourth for a two-run lead, 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Liles and Clements went back-to-back with home runs to tie the game at three. After two scoreless innings, ETBU had the game winning run in the seventh inning.
ETBU 4, MC 1
McLendon went seven innings, retiring the first nine batters, and allowed only one earned run with six strikeouts as ETBU completed the series sweep, 4-1. Kayla Garcia went 3-of-3 with a double to lead the team. Romero, Swaner, and Gardner all had a RBI on walks with the bases loaded.
ETBU scored three runs in the second inning all coming on walks with the bases loaded. Mississippi College earned their only run in the sixth inning cutting the lead to two, 3-1, before Liles had a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the three-run lead.
ETBU left 10 runners on base and had four errors in the game and Mississippi College finished with four hits.
ETBU travels to Clarksville, Ark., this weekend for a four-game series with the University of the Ozarks.
