Weekend Tiger Athletics: ETBU Hits Two More Home Runs; Splits Games with LETUby Adam Ledyard
BASEBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (3/29/13) – It took three tries but by the third game East Texas Baptist University figured out how to defeat LeTourneau University as they split the double header on Saturday at Woods Field. LeTourneau took game one, 6-4, but ETBU gained one win in the final game, 6-3, as they moved to 14-15 on the year and 5-4 in the ASC East.
Jon Burkhart had four hits on the day while Garrett Parsons and Tyler Bates added two more home runs to ETBU’s NCAA Division III leading total of 27. Bates led the team with three RBI. Zack Tampke earned his third win on the year and Matt Lefler picked up his first collegiate save.
LeTourneau 6, ETBU 4
A four run second inning by LeTourneau was the difference in the game as they took the series winning game two, 6-4. T.J. Barnes went the distance with two strikeouts but gave up six runs, three earned, on 12 hits. Burkhart went 2-of-3 with one RBI to lead the team. Phillip Windham, Lance Anding, and Josh Sanders all had a RBI.
Windham made it 1-0 in the first with a sacrifice fly to left field for his only RBI in the game. In the top of the second, LeTourneau added four runs and then took a 6-1 lead with two runs in the third inning. ETBU answered back with three in the fourth inning to cut the lead to two, 6-4.
Burkhart and Sanders had back-to-back singles that brought in two runs each as they picked up a RBI. Anding earned the final run of the inning with a ground out RBI to the second baseman.
LeTourneau had 12 hits in the game including two home runs by Dillon Yates scoring three of their six runs.
ETBU 6, LeTourneau 3
LeTourneau took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second inning before ETBU tied the game at two in the bottom of the second inning. ETBU then added a run in the fifth and sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. LeTourneau cut the lead to one, 4-3, in the top of the eighth but ETBU brought in two runs in the bottom of the inning making it 6-3.
Bates went 2-of-4 with three RBI in the game and his third home run of the year. Anding, Garrett Parsons, and Sanders all had one RBI. Tampke went seven innings for the win with four strikeouts and two earned runs on eight hits. Lefler went the final two innings allowing only two hits and no runs.
After LeTourneau went up 2-0, Bates doubled in Jeremy Pinder for the first run of the game. Three batters later, with two outs, Anding singled to left field tying up the game at two as Bates came in.
In the fifth inning, Parsons smacked his seventh home run of the year to break the 2-2 tie as ETBU moved ahead. Then, in the sixth inning, Sanders singled down the right field line that allowed Pinder to come in.
Bates put ETBU up by three with his third home run of the year in the eighth inning with one out as Pinder scored again in the game and ETBU put LeTourneau away for their only win in the series.
ETBU goes on the road next weekend as they travel to Louisiana College for a three-game series.
ETBU Doesn't Overcome LETU's Early Lead
BASEBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (3/28/13) – Climbing out of a deep hole from the beginning of the game, East Texas Baptist University (13-14/4-3) never quite got to the top falling in the American Southwest Conference East Division series opener to LeTourneau University (14-10/4-6), 11-5. ETBU trailed 7-0 after the first two innings and was within three but couldn’t find the hits to move ahead in the game.
Jeremy Pinder and Tyler Bates each had two hits on the night to lead the team. Lance Anding, Phillip Windham, and Bates all had a RBI. Windham smashed his 10th home run of the year which ties the lead for NCAA Division III.
Ernest Perez started on the mound and went just 0.1 innings before being relieved by Jimmy Russo. Perez gave up four runs, three earned and three hits in just 0.1 innings. Russo went 7.1 innings, pitching five innings of shutout baseball, before LeTourneau put four runs up in the eighth inning. Russo finished with seven earned runs on seven hits and had one strikeout. Luke Pinkard finished the last 1.1 innings and had one strikeout and one hit.
LeTourneau jumped on Perez early scoring four runs in the first before being relieved by Russo. In the second, LeTourneau added three more runs for the 7-0 lead.
ETBU picked away at LeTourneau’s lead scoring two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut the lead two three, 7-4. Anding brought in the first run with an RBI single up the middle as Bates came in and on the same play a fielding error took place letting Nick Grizzell score from second base.
Bates brought in a run in the sixth inning and then in the seventh inning, Matty Sullivan scored on a LeTourneau error for the fourth run. LeTourneau responded with four runs in the eighth to put the game away as Windham smacked his 10th home run of the year in the ninth for ETBU’s fifth run.
ETBU hosts LeTourneau in a double header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Parker Earns Game 1 Win Over LC; ETBU Splits Series
SOFTBALL: PINEVILLE, La. (3/29/13) – In a classic American Southwest Conference East Division match up, #8 East Texas Baptist University and Louisiana College split their double header. ETBU took game one, 3-2, but then fell in game two, 5-2, and is now 20-6 and 8-2 in the ASC East.
Five players for ETBU had two hits and Lacy Liles led the team with two RBI. Shelby Parker won game one with five strikeouts improving to 7-2 on the year.
ETBU 3, LC 2
ETBU scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning and then Parker finished up the game for the win working through the tying run on base striking out two batters in the inning. For the final out, Parker struck out the batter with the tying run on second base.
Tawny Hank went 2-of-3 in the game and Alyssa Romero and Liles each had a RBI.
Louisiana College took a 2-0 lead scoring a run in the first and third innings before ETBU tied the game at two in the fourth. Liles tripled in Kayla Garcia and then stole home on the next play as LC tried to throw out Sara Clements at second base after she walked.
In the seventh inning, Romero had the winning hit as she doubled to left field scoring Mallory Westbrook for the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the inning, Parker finished off LC with the tying run on base striking out the final batter of the inning for her seventh win.
LC 5, ETBU 2
ETBU took a 2-0 lead scoring runs in the first and third inning before giving up five runs in the third falling behind by three runs. ETBU could not recover from the third inning as they were handed their second loss in the ASC East.
ETBU only had four hits with one coming from Maranda Westbrook, Garcia, Liles, and Mallory Westbrook. Liles had the lone RBI in the game.
Liles brought in the first run of the game on a LC error as Garcia scored. In the third Liles singled to right field as Maranda Westbrook came in for the 2-0 lead. IN the bottom of the inning, ETBU then let LC have five runs losing the lead.
Hank went 2.2 innings for her third loss of the year with three strikeouts and five earned runs. Kelly Jo McLendon finished up the final 3.1 innings with one strikeout and no runs.
ETBU will host Mississippi College on April 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at Taylor Field.
