Tiger Athletics: ETBU Wins 4th Game in Row; Gains 12th Win of the Year

BASEBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (3/19/13) - Grinding out a victory in a single nine-inning game, East Texas Baptist University held off North Central College, 6-3, for their 12th win of the year to move ahead of .500 at 12-11. ETBU scored four runs in the second and two in the fifth to claim the victory.
Ernest Perez moved to 2-1 on the year going six innings giving up just five hits and three earned runs. Tanner Matthews finished the final three innings for his first collegiate save producing one strikeout. Both Matty Sullivan and Phillip Windham had two hits each while Windham added to his home run total as the ASC leader with eight. Windham has now hit a home run in his last three games. Garrett Parsons kept his hitting streak alive at 11 games as he picked up one hit. Sullivan lead the team with two RBI as Parsons, Windham, and Jon Burkhart all had one RBI.
The second inning was the difference in the game as ETBU brought in four runs for the 4-0 lead. Nick Grizzell came in first with the bases loaded on North Central wild pitch. After Anding walked to load the bases again, Sullivan singled up the middle as Burkhart and Abascal both came in to make it 3-0. Parsons then followed with a single down the left field line as Anding became the fourth run.
North Central answered right back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning but in the bottom of the fifth inning ETBU added three insurance runs for the win. After Parsons flew out to start the fifth, Windham smashed his eighth home run of the year over the left field score board for the 5-3 lead. After two singles and a walk to load the bases, Burkhart had a sacrifice fly to center field as Tyler Bates touched home for the sixth run.
ETBU travels to Tyler, Texas, on Friday for a nine-inning ASC East game with #15 Texas-Tyler.
Parker One Hits LETU; ETBU Complete Shuts Out Jackets
SOFTBALL: LONGVIEW, Texas (3/19/20) – Completely shutting out LeTourneau University in a double header American Southwest Conference East sweep, #13 East Texas Baptist University moved to 16-2 on the year and 4-0 in conference play. ETBU took game one, 3-0, and then won game two, 12-0.
Sara Clements record five hits and five RBI on the day to lead the team with a 3-of-3 performance in game two producing four RBI and three runs scored. Kayla Garcia and Kelsey DeCarolis each had three hits, too. Tawny Hank improved to 7-0 with the win in game one while Shelby Parker pitched five innings in game two for her fifth win of the year.
ETBU will put their undefeated ASC East record on the line on Thursday against #3 Texas-Tyler at 5:00 p.m. at Taylor Field
Game 1
ETBU 3, LETU 0
ETBU did all their scoring in the first three innings picking up two in the first and one in the third. The defense did the rest holding LETU to just five hits. Hank went the full seven innings to improve to 7-0 giving up the five hits and no runs while striking out two. Garcia and Clements both went 2-of-3 and produced a RBI. Lacy Liles had the other RBI for ETBU.
With two outs in the first inning, ETBU scored two runs for the 2-0 lead. Liles tripled in Garcia and then Clements followed with a double to bring in Garcia for the two runs. In the third inning, Garcia singled in Lya Swaner for the 3-0 lead. ETBU then held onto the lead for the shutout, 3-0
Game 2
ETBU 12, LETU 0
Scoring 12 runs in the first three innings, ETBU finished off the sweep 12-0. ETBU had 12 hits and Shelby Parker only gave up one hit in the win with six strikeouts. Clements went 3-of-3 for four RBI and three runs scored. Both DeCarolis and Hank produced two hits with two RBI. Alyssa Romero, Swaner, Liles, and Logan Gardner all had one RBI.
Four runs came in the first inning as ETBU took control of the game. Liles, DeCarolis, Clements, and Gardner all had RBI hits. Liles was a double while the other three hits were singles for ETBU. Adding two more runs in the second inning, ETBU went up 6-0. Clements doubled in Liles and then Hank followed with a single to left centerfield to score Clements.
Swaner started the six-run third with a single up the middle to bring in Maranda Westbrook. Three batters later, Clements singled through the right side that brought in both Garcia and Swaner for a 9-0 lead. Hank then grounded out but it was deep enough to the short stop to allow Liles to touch home plate. DeCarolis followed with a single scoring Clements and then Romero was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for her RBI.
ETBU next plays on Thursday hosting #3 Texas-Tyler at 5:00 p.m. at Taylor Field.
2nd Straight Week: Garrett Parsons ASC East Hitter of the Week
BASEBALL: AMERICAN SOUTWEST CONFERENCE (3/20/2013) - East Texas Baptist sophomore catcher Garrett Parsons (Channelview, Texas / CHS) went 9-for-17 with two home runs, two triples, two doubles and 10 RBIs to fuel a 4-1 week, including a three-game East Division sweep of Ozarks. Parsons, who takes the division’s top hitting award for the second straight week, also scored five runs and walked six times. He now has a 10-game hitting streak.
