ETBU Establishes the Dr. Jim Webb Endowed Scholarship
by Dr. Will Walker
MARSHALL, Texas (12/21/12)- The East Texas Baptist University Department of Kinesiology, in cooperation with the Office of University Advancement and ETBU Athletics, is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dr. Jim Webb Endowed Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the Department of Kinesiology.
Dr. Webb came to ETBU in 1974 from Southern Baptist Junior College, in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. He served as Head Men's Basketball Coach from 1974 until 1991, with a 1978-79 sabbatical to complete his doctoral degree. His 221 wins as head coach is 2nd all-time at ETBU, and in addition to his coaching duties, he also served as Director of Athletics from 1976-91. In 1998, he was inducted into the ETBU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Besides his roles in athletics, Dr. Webb served as a university faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology from 1974 to 1991 and again from 1995 to 2005 (at this time also serving as Chairman of the Department). Among his other academic accomplishments, he was named Teacher of the Year in 1976 and served as President of the Faculty Senate in 1987.
In the Marshall community, Webb served on the Board of Directors for the Harrison County Boys and Girls Club, President of the Marshall Lions Club, and as a Deacon at First Baptist Church of Marshall. He is currently retired and resides in Hot Springs, Arkansas, with his wife, Ann.
Despite all of these accomplishments, Dr. Webb's most-lasting legacy will always be his tremendous positive impact on generations of players, students, and young coaches.
As part of ETBU’s December graduation festivities, Dallas-area lawyer, commencement speaker, and former Tiger basketball star, who played under Dr. Webb’s tutelage, Leon Carter presented him with a commemorative chalkboard. It was the actual slate board used by the former coach for his term as men’s basketball coach.
