ETBU Holds Centennial Homecoming, October 19-21
MARSHALL, Texas (10/10/12)- East Texas Baptist University will be holding its "Centennial Homecoming” October 19-21, 2012. ETBU was founded on October 22, 1912.
The official start of the Centennial celebration weekend is on Friday, October 19 at 10:00 a.m. in Baker Auditorium of the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center. Alumni Awards and the Golden Blazer Ceremony will highlight the Chapel service. Recipients of Alumni Awards will include David (’70) and Jerri (’70) Warren, the W.T. Tardy Service Award; Mike Edens (’73), J. Wesley Smith Achievement Award; Alumni Achievement Awards to Earle Oldham (’52) and Don Woolley (’58); Young Alumnus Awards to Steven Webb (’02) and Nathan Lorick (’03) and the Unsung Hero Award to Meredith McLeod-Duncan (’64).
The venue for the Golden Lightkeepers Luncheon at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19, will be the Edwards Conference Room located inside the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center. Golden Lightkeepers Awards, given to Distinguished Alumni of 50 years or more, will be presented to Milburn Bowers (’52), T. Milton Duke (’60), and Doris Owen Simmons (’59). Also, the presentation of "Golden Lightkeepers” medallions will occur. The medallions will be given to graduates of 50 years or more and the class of 1962.
Other activities on Friday, October 19, the "42” tournament in the Huffman Activities Area on the first floor of the Ornelas Student Center; Class of 1952 reception in the Cornish Great Room, second floor of the Ornelas Student Center; Faculty Reception, Heritage Room-Mamye Jarrett Library; Department of Mathematics Open House, Meadows Hall, Room 209; "Sunday in the Park with George” musical presented by the Department of Theatre at the Marshall Convention Center; Late Night Breakfast, the Bennett Student Commons; and the Tiger Pep Rally and Bonfire, Ornelas Gymnasium, then behind Ornelas Residence Hall.
On Saturday, October 20, homecoming and Golden Blazers breakfast, the Bennett Student Commons; class reunions and brunch for the classes of 1962, 1972, 1987, in the Ornelas Student Center; School of Education Open House, Harvey Daniel Bruce Hall; 1999 -2002 Baseball Reunion, Phillips Great Room, first floor of the Bennett Student Commons; Department of Nursing, Craig Hall; and Department of Modern Languages Open House, Scarborough Hall, first floor.
The Homecoming Parade on Saturday morning will feature many floats made by students. The Homecoming Parade will start on campus at 11:30 a.m. and travel down Tiger Drive.
The ETBU Family Picnic will be held at noon in the Bennett Student Commons.
The ETBU Tigers will play Howard Payne University at 1:00 p.m. in the homecoming football game at Ornelas Stadium. The "Coming Home Queen” ceremony will be held during pregame activities. The Homecoming King and Queen will be announced during halftime activities. Also at halftime, a performance from the Tiger Marching Band.
Homecoming activities during the game inside the stadium include the Cub and Tiger Club Party and the Young Alum Reunion, 2002 Honor Class.
The Centennial Gala will be Saturday evening. Gala check-in is at 6:15 p.m. with the Gala celebration starting at 7:00 p.m. A student Centennial event, in which alumni are welcome to participate, will be held on the Intramural Field. A fireworks show is scheduled to start at 8:45 p.m.
A special alumni worship service will be held on Sunday, October 21. The service will be held in the Lampsato Chapel on the second floor of the Ornelas Student Center at 9:00 a.m.
