TIGER SPORTS: Two Honored This Week By ASC

by Adam Ledyard

RICHARDSON, Texas (9/18/12) – Scoring two of the most important goals of the season to this point, Pete Fitzsimmons was named the ASC (American Southwest Conference) Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Fitzsimmons had both game winning goals in key ASC matches to help East Texas Baptist University off to a 2-0 start in conference.

Fitzsimmons took only one shot vs. the University of Texas-Tyler and that was all that was needed as it was the game winner, 1-0, in the 82nd minute. The win over UT-Tyler, who is ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA regional poll and was pre-season ranked #9 in the nation in August, was the first program win for East Texas Baptist vs. the Patriots.

Another heroic shot came in double-overtime against ASC rival LeTourneau as Fitzsimmons netted the game winning golden goal in the 105th minute for a 2-1 win. He took 11 shots vs. LeTourneau with two on goal. The win put East Texas Baptist at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the ASC.

With a 2-0 start in the ASC, East Texas Baptist and the University of Texas-Dallas are the only two teams with 2-0 starts. This is the first award this year for the men’s soccer program. They will put their 2-0 record on the line on Thursday playing in Temple, Texas, vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor.
