ETBU’s first delegation in the Harvard National Model United Nations Conference will compete in Boston Feb. 16-18. Eight students representing Haiti will negotiate critical issues facing the world community alongside undergraduates from across the globe.
“This is the very first time for ETBU to participate at Harvard National Model United Nations,” said Israel Nandamudi, professor of political science. “We are thrilled and very privileged to have this opportunity. It is a benefit for the student’s credentials and a chance to meet extraordinary people from other countries.”
Each student reports to a separate committee, such as the World Health Organization, the Special Summit on Non-Discrimination or the Disarmament and International Security Committee. The delegates will employ their diplomatic and writing skills to confront the issues at hand in the meetings.
A creative solution to each problem requires the students’ effort in consolidating public and interpersonal rapport. All proposed resolutions must provide an active and collaborative approach to resolving international issues.
“I think that this a great opportunity for ETBU because it’s the first time we’ll be at Harvard,” said Francisco Abad, head representative of the ETBU delegation. “It shows that our school is progressing through previous Model United Nations conferences. We’ll be ready for the national and international competition.”
During the trip, the students will also have a chance to tour Harvard and the Boston cityscape. A Summer Opportunities and Career Fair could present students with a chance to intern abroad or across the country.
Social amenities including a delegate dance and a cultural exchange party will further cement the new relationships and experiences the students forge.
Funding for the trip was extended by the ETBU administration.
